Not much in Abbeville. You may want to live in Cordele. I don't know your preference on race but their are many more blacks than you will be used to. Abbeville is beautiful area though.

My husband and I have been looking at Dublin, it looks like a really nice place to live. We are an interracial couple and have raised our children in multi cultural envirnoments, do you think Dublin would be a good place for our family. Our Children are grown, my husband is a Police officer for the Veteran affairs administration, we currently reside in California but wish to relocate to southern Georgia. Would appreciate any input.

Hey, How far do you want to move? I am from Auburn GA. We are located 45 min. North of Atlanta. Auburn is partially in Gwinnett County and mainly in Barrow County. Our population is 7,600 mostly people in their 40's with a good mix of elderly. Auburn is a quiet place with one Elementary school in the city, the schools in Barrow County are very encouraging to the children and they have consistenly improved over the last five years.
We are working on some historic preservation for buildings and homes and have almost completed our new library, a beautiful place. We have parks and ball fields. Barrow County also offers many opportunities for family activities. We are working on a community center and offering more activities. We have Girl scouts and boy scouts in Auburn. 4 churches, one big grocery store, and try to focus on small local businesses. We have our own police department which has I believe 14 officers along with support staff. I love our little town, we are working hard on providing all that is needed to live, work and play right here! Best of luck, relocating is difficult. visit Auburn's home page at City of Auburn Home

Lindan, you will like Dublin
if you like small, quiet towns that have a steady, manageable growth rate (cannot be found in metro areas). Dublin is about 20,000 population with Laurens County being about 50,000 population total. Dublin city is about 50% Black American, 1% SubSaharan African, 45% white, 1% Asian Indian, 1% Chinese, 1% Japanese, and 1% Hispanic. Laurens County in total is about 65% white, so the city provides almost all the diversity. Interracial couples are quite welcome and represent about .5% of the population.
Dublin is a town that still has a quaint downtown along with a shopping mall with about 20 stores (including Belk's and J.C. Penney, Bath & Body Works, etc.). There is the beauty of the Greek revival architecture on Bellevue Avenue and the oddity of a seven-story tower downtown built one hundred years ago.
In the last ten years, Dublin has added a Best Buy distribution facility, a Fred's discount store distribution facility, and a Japanese company (YKK) has expanded rapidly. The mall area continues to grow over the last 10 years (with a Red Lobster, Home Depot, Applebee's, super Wal-Mart, giant Kroger) as well as the I-16/US 441 interchange (Holiday Inn Express, LaQuinta, Ruby Tuesdays, Cracker Barrell, Longhorn Steakhouse).
Health care in the area is excellent with the Veterans Administation (source of spouse's job?) and the seven-floor Fairview Park Hospital.
Education opportunities include the Dublin Center of the University of Georgia, and Dublin High School offers a great education while giving the nod to diversity (69% minority) and staying slightly ahead of the county schools in SAT scores. However, school choice is the absolute easiest here, since there is no districting (you can haul your kids anywhere you like in the county, even while dwelling in the city) and there is also a private Christian school.
I hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your reply IrishVanGuard. My husband and I just have a good feeling about Dublin. My husband has a Career with the Police department, I have worked for the school Dist. here for about 5 years. I am an intake Clerk for Special Education. Would like to find employment comparable, If I cannot find employment in Dublin, what nearby city would I then search? Also I just want to say thanks to everyone who takes time to give input to those wanting to relocate. Its so very comforting and assuring to have strangers encourage and support the many, many questions and apprehensions that come with such a lifechanging event like moving. Everyone on this forum has been very uplifting in nature with their answers, thank you again.

for school systems, try calling Laurens County schools 478 272-4767
Dublin city schools 478 272-3440
You may also want to look up systems one hour away in metro areas:
Houston County schools (Warner Robins)
Bibb County schools (Macon)
Of course, most school hiring seems to be done Jan.-May

If it makes any difference, the Chatham-Savannah area police force is short about 80 officers according to a recent newspaper article. Your husband should have no problem getting a position.
Some schools are excellent, some are bad. Overall, a lot depends on whether the child gets a good teacher or one that is merely drawing a check. The parents have to take an interest in what's going on. We have a new superintendent of schools and he is beginning to make a difference. Naturally, test scores, etc from the bad schools pull down the overall average of all the schools.
