The most liberal population areas in Georgia are around college centers like UGA, SSU, CSU, VSU,FVSU and the many colleges in Atlanta. Outside the cities in Georgia Macon, Atlanta, and thats mostly sconservative area. Thats really a fact for most states
do that here and you'll probably be called annoying.
because who on earth doesn't know what dreadlocks are?
it would come across as put-on to make nice.
just a tip. i don't know how it is in california, but southern people don't tend to beat around the bush.
i am not talking about the big fat bob marley dreads, i'm talking about the thin long ones. and we really don't say dreadlocs, it's just "locs" and the 2 women i've made comments to are truly surprised and delighted that i know what they are (most would assume they are just extensions or something) and am interested in them. i don't think they are faking. when someone says hey that is a great dress or wow did you get that awesome turquoise necklace in mexico...is that annoying? i thought it was a compliment!
i am complimenting them and engaging in a conversation because my daughter has baby locs and i like to speak with people that have them so as a mother I can help her have nice hair.

steph
i understand what you're saying. i'm just trying to explain how you should expect to be received.
i'm apprehensive to explain any further; we'll just leave it as is.
Everyone is right you DO NOT want to live in or near Atlanta. We live about half way between Atlanta and the mountains. We live in Forsyth Co. and have a really nice house for sale. This is a great area and alot of really great people live here. My husband got laid off from his job and we are being forced to relocate to Michigan. We have our house listed about 30k below normal listing price because of the economy. Our house is only 5 yrs. old and has been well taken care of with large rooms and a great screened in porch on the back.
High Crime, in Dawson and Lumpkin counties??? Are you off your gourd??? I have lived here for most of my life and that is just crazy that you would say that?? In the first place there are not enough people here to commit much crime. We are too busy working and having fun to committ crimes. Oh, there are some drugs here but that is anywhere USA.
My father is from Eastman, it's a small town in Dodge County (Macon). I don't go down there to visit my dad's side of the family unless I am force to do so. Don't get me wrong, the people there are nice and welcoming for the most part, but that small town is still segregated. The white and black folks will work and play together, but they will not live together. There are some good black neighborhoods and then some bad ones. There are some good white neighborhoods and then there are some bad ones. From my point of view, the crime there comes from both white and black folks...but nothing "major". Overall, I feel safe walking around by myself. Another reason why I don't go down there is becase it is a very boring typical small town...the most exciting thing they got down there is some cotton fields and a movie theater. It's not a bad town...if you want to go some place to concentrate on writing a book or a movie script (it's not for people who have a party lifestyle or for young people in general). But it has a lot of potential to become better and to grow.
My parents own a house in Bonaire in Cobb County, that's my favorite place to be in Georgia. It's near a milatary base so you have residents there from out of state and from different countries. The house is in a multi-cultural neighborhood and I love it. Whites, blacks, latinos, jewish people, europeon folks, etc living together. It's funny how some people say that "folks from different race and religion can't live together", but that is not true....we get along just fine and the neighborhood is not a war zone. Every time I go to Bonaire, they always have something new. So that town is really growing! It's not that conservative compare to other towns in Georgia, I love it.
I've been to Atlanta a couple of times over the years and it has changed a lot. Personally, I wouldn't live there...but it's not the worst city in the US.
Same with Savannah, it has changed a lot as well. I'm actually going to go to SCAD this year and I am a bit anxious. I've never lived in the south...just visit there for about 2-3 months every other year. I guess you can say that i'm a "yankee", but not the type of yankee that expects everything and everyone to have the same view as the north. I respect people's way of life in the south and I'm not going to go down there and try to change people or whine about the south...just because it's "different".
I think my main concern about Savannah is really the pollution and the racism. I love being around a multi cultural setting and i'm not too quick to generalize people...but I have a feeling that it won't be like that in Savannah. I'm not saying that there isn't any racism in the north, i'm not that naive! But in the north, it's more in the closet.
I'm not too concern about the crime, because crime is in every city, although that's something that I have to get use to. But I will try to make the best of it. I am very young but also mature, have manners and was taught not to blame anyone for my problems and to work hard. So maybe I'll be fine down there...hopefully.

I grew up in southeast GA, and my mother is from Malden, MA. The only difference is that we southerners are more known for our hospitality. We don't even mind a "yankee" coming for a visit. lol Good luck at SCAD. They're a good school. I love Savannah, especially Riverstreet during festivals and the Old Savannah Squares. It's a beautiful old city. Keep an eye on the Savannah paper for where the crime is occurring when you move down. The only thing you're really going to have to get used to is the bugs and the heat.

Yes, you are right . I sort of didn't think about that part when I was writing. Every time I go to Georgia I feel welcome, even when i'm walking down a street I get about 78643764 waves and smiles from people that I don't even know.
After re-reading what I said, I feel sort of stupid for saying that my main concern about Savannah is the racism...because racism in everywhere.
Thank-you for wishing me luck PaisleyChic and thanks for the advice, i'll read the papers every morning then.
By the way, may I ask what kind of bugs are down there? I think the only bugs that I remember seeing are mosquitoes and flies.
