Where is the charm?
Hi, I'm moving to the Cumming area this summer. I've been looking at housing and have not found anything but new developments and (I'm sorry) byut dumps, and they are 99,000.00! There is no in between. Is there an older neighborhood with smaller nice homes that I am missing? A cute cottage or bungalow or should I look in one of the nearby towns. I will be working in North Cumming near the lake. Thanks!

Athens is a liberal (college) town that has lots to offer. We have everything everyone else has (the Superwalmarts) but also decent book and grocery stores (Borders, Earthfare) and restaurants to meet everyone's needs. We even have a veterinary college where you can get state-of-the-art treatment for your pets, and to which people come from surrounding states. The few things you can not find here are in Atlanta (e.g. Ikea, international airport) which is only 1 hour away. The mountains are 1-2 hours north and absolutely beautiful in the fall, the coast/beach is 3-4 hours south. It's not as hot as south GA, although still plenty hot; winters are quite pleasant but have enough sting to make it feel like a distinct season and if you're lucky you might even see some snow every few years - fat chance of that in Albany!
I've lived here for 18 years; traffic has gotten a lot worse and now that I am older, the students are driving me nuts most of the time. It's gotten too busy for me. But you can find quiet living just a few miles outside of Athens, and still be close to everything you might need.
I myself would love to move to SW Georgia - I've travelled through all parts of Georgia and find the SW the most beautiful, laidback and friendly. Although, I've heard the gnats are bad...

Relocating to Georgia
I am a human resources professional with a Masters degree looking to relocate to Georgia in 2008. I currently live in the 2nd worst place to live in the US (Flint, MI). Can anyone share with me the job market for HR professionals in Georgia? I'm looking for a city that isn't too busy but has alot of things for families to do. Any suggestions?

This forum is funny
Anyhow, as for this Savannah college being "Worldclass" if the World is savannah, then you would be correct. It is "Worldclass", because as we all know, the art World resides in savannah Georgia usa. You are right. There are many creative trade schools around the country. Anyhow, the place is a bargain and has no ranking whatsoever. Its a nice place for F and D students who couldn't go to a real art college. Doesnt the president receive cartons of chalk dust from miami often for the school? Whatever, ... just a rumour.
If you want a true honest opinion of what people in Savannah think, ask one of its many residents, they make up the majority of the population. Just go to the 'Hitchvillage' slum section of savannah (one of many) and ask them if Savannah is a happy wonderful "worldclass city". Their answer may surprise you. But then again, with the high levels of gross inequality and discrimination that takes place in Savannah. It would be best to have some friends with you, just for protection. What, savannah has a high crime rate? Hmmm, must be a lot of anger there. Wonder why? You see, Savannah is a happy go lucky place for those who are likeminded and indifferent to the brutal realities of poverty and racism that exists there. I don't care where you come from. If you are not affected by it, then why should you care? Right? savannah is just another New Orleans, smaller and less violent but none the less, it is the same. and it too one day, soon, actually will explode in the same way. Especially if the current levels of gentrification continue as they have in Savannah. Some people are going to be so surprised when everything hits. all it takes is a storm or some sort of event to set it off. All of the elements are there and ready. Savannah will reap what it has sewn in due time.
<EDIT>
take care

G_still76 i live in north georgia (not too far north, about 20-25 minutes outside of atlanta) and I have lived here my entire life. if you are looking for something outside of the city with good school i recommend Cobb County. Cobb has some of the best schools in the state and it is a nice area. i very highly recommend West Cobb, but East Cobb also is a very nice area. Now, as far as mountains go, my parents recently built a house on Red Top Mountain, which is about 15 minutes north of Kennesaw (Cobb County--this is where i grew up). It is right off the highway but on a mountain and they have an amazing view of Lake Allatoona. It is the perfect balance of accessibility and getting that "out of town" feel. Plus, there is a lake view and mountain views and you can see all the way to the city on a clear day from some spots. The biggest downside (for some): it is in emerson (bartow county). Emerson is a VERY small town. the schools in this area are going to be sub-par (although Walker, a private school, is located not too far away in Marietta and they could always go there) and being that you have never even been to georgia you might have a hard time adjusting in this kind of area because most of them are going to be VERY southern. I don't know if you care about that, but I know a lot of people who move here have a hard time adjusting if they don't move somewhere "less southern."
Other areas you may want to consider are Canton or Woodstock, these areas are also north but not too far removed, and the schools are pretty decent. Now, areas around Lake Lanier (Dawsonville) and Helen would be great areas to move for that mountain view you are looking for, but they are going to be about 40-45 minutes from the city and i don't know much about the schools, but i would not count on anything amazing. A lot of people move to those areas to retire, not start life.

My husband is an Ophthalimic Technician in the eye care business. He works for a private Dr. so he will be unable to transfer to Georgia. We have 2 children in grade school, so good schools are important also. Is there any way we could have all of this and still have mountains? We really don't want to live in the city...but we don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere either!Any info would be very helpful-Thank You!

Don't know why you are having so much trouble
jraby...i don't know why you are having such a hard time. it is definitely not difficult to find houses with basements here, but i live in north GA so maybe it is just different.

Savannah is one of the worst places to live in GA.
See my post titled "I would not move to Savannah" for details.

Court0831, most of what you posted was good information and much appreciated, I am sure, so I'm sorry but I must object to the excerpt above.
Dawsonville is 55-60 miles from Atlanta and Helen is about 80-90 miles away! Please take our traffic into consideration as well.
(Incredibly, I have learned that there are people who plan moves based mostly on information given here.)
