Question We're Outta Here

My husband (75) and I (61) are moving on Wednesday from South Florida to south Richmond County, Georgia. We lost our home to Hurricane Wilma two years ago and I've worked 6 full days a week since to keep a roof over our heads. Enough.

In July we sold our condo in a wrecked building to a developer. Didn't get much but went to Augusta last month and bought a $89,000 house for $21,000 and three-fifths acre of land to go with it. And no mortgage.

We'll be a couple of miles north of McBean and near the county line. Is there anything we should know about the area that a realtor didn't mention? I'm wondering how we got a fairly new 3/2 so cheap and whether there be swamp creatures in the area or cannibals or something to watch out for....?

Thank you Sillynilly. We're here in Augusta as of this (Friday) afternoon. Mayflower should have our stuff along some day soon. Augusta itself is a bit scary due to all the traffic on Bobby Jones and also on Washington Road. I'll welcome the peace and quiet of being way down toward Burke. Is there an actual town called McBean? And are Walkinshaw or Mechanics Hill really towns? Guess you can tell I'm wondering whether I need go into Augusta proper to shop or whether there are small area business I can go to. If not McBean, what is in Waynesboro besides golf carts and bird dogs? They have a Wal Mart, don't they? We took the bypass but I saw some businesses and I LOVE small towns.

There is even talk in our legislature of doing away with property tax. That may be a long shot, but it keeps coming back up. Of course if they did that, you can bet sales tax on consumption items would go up.

I've lived in Atlanta for 25+ years, and made a good living. But I am now headed to the mountains in about 6 months. Jasper is where we bult our house, and it's a lovely little town. I imagine it would be a perfect spot for a writer! Metro Atlanta is only about 65 miles south if you need an urban fix. You have 4 distinct seasons, but the winter is fairly mild.

Hope that helps!

I hate to say this, but (IMHO) living in Georgia (specifically, Albany) is not worth 10% of what it costs. We are paying through the nose on every conceivable tax, probably b/c of the high percentage of Albanians on welfare, and in return for our heavy taxation we get abysmally bad schools, little to no police/fire protection*, and GALLONS of attitude from locals.
*--Had to call the fire department last summer for my next-door neighbor. Despite the fact that our neighborhood is 50+ years old, the fire department COULD NOT FIND THE HOUSE. NOT a confidence-builder, people.

You want low taxes? Skip Georgia entirely and try Alabama.
