Poulan Speed Trap
Got my ticket the first week of March, court date was a month later on a tuesday at 6 pm. I went to the "Courthouse" and what a hoot! Poulan looks to be 4 blocks by 3 blocks, you would miss it if you passed the water tower. There are 3 police officers, with shiny new vehicles, mustangs, SUV, etc. all with new decals on the sides for their law enforcement. Guess where you speeding ticket money goes? There is no municipal building, no stores, no gas stations, no amenities of any kind. To find the courthouse, you drive down one of two access roads from the main highway, keep going until you see a metal building that says "Fire Department". At the bottom of the sign, in small letters it will have " City Hall" Go to the back side of the building, where you should be able to see the three police officers smoking and joking next to the doorway of the courtroom. The actual room is approximately 12 ft by 14 ft, and a third of it is some sort of table that I presume the judge would use. I didn't stick around, paid my fine, held my laughter (it was so very obvious a money machine) and left town, all three blocks of it. The one mile stretch of road that they monitor was unattended for about an hour, so I think their revenue suffers a bit when it's court time. I go through this speed trap about 4 times a year, have been doing so for ten years and never realized what I was missing. This town has no other source of income, they don't use money for anything other than their police cars. Any upgrades to city hall stopped after cheap wood paneling and plastic chairs came along. I guess you also can figure out that there is no computer system, filing is done by the cardboard box method, stacks and stacks of them. I am still laughing, so if you have to go to court there, enjoy the experience-it certainly was worth my time to see the local government in action, or inaction, whichever.
