Can't Find A Town...Help!
Hi all,
My husband and I are thinking about moving to GA. Cost of living is killing us up here in PA. My problem is that I keep searching for a town that we might be interested in but are striking out with pictures and information. If anyone can help us, I'd greatly appreciate it.
The type of town we're looking for has a small town feel to it. We'd love something historic looking with trees and lanterns lining the streets and Main Street. The town should have a community feel (ie. 4th of July parades/picnics, etc.) We have to be out of the hurricane region. Good schools are important too. If there was a town that was into Christmas that would be great also.
Thank you for the info.
Dale

Our little town is GREAT! Try visiting http://www.richmondhill-ga.gov, the website for Richmond Hill. We're on the coast, but haven't been hit by a hurricane in ages (knock on wood). Oddly enough, north GA and the ATL areas get a lot more rain and bad weather from the gulf hurricanes than we do on the coast.
Schools are A++
We have a great public park that hosts several festivals & fairs every year several with fireworks. (I LOVE fireworks). We still have a christmas parade and decorations that line the streets. We're also very close to Savannah which is nice.

Anything really close to Atlanta like Woodstock, Roswell, Alpharetta is not going to have the small town feel you described.
Helen was mentioned and that is a good choice, however it is kind of a tourist trap. You could look at Ellijay, Dalton...anything in the N. Ga mountains...Blue Ridge...
Ya know, you may want to even consider looking at Chattanooga, TN. It's right on the GA/TN boarder and only 1.5 hrs from Atlanta. The town has really changed a lot in the last few years. Its not tiny, but not too big either and it definitly has a nice downtown atmosphere (it is becoming more touristy as well).

Try Lagrange
I've been impressed by Lagrange thus far (plan to move there for a job). Nice private and public schools. Symphony, arts community. Square with shops. They are remodeling the downtown movie theatre to include 10 screens stadium seating. There are not alot of chain stores yet, but that'll come I'm hoping. Kia will be building a plant there that will bring in lots of new folks, in addition to other suppliers that will support Kia. I do know that Target is coming to LaGrange. I'm hoping for a boom. Lagrange is on the I-85 corridor on which Newnan is part of...the growth will continue to move in Lagrange's direction...buy land while it's cheap. Homes range from the dirt poor to over 1million+. Country club community, lots of new subdivisions... Tell me what you think.

Check into Newnan
Dale, if you like all that 'town square' and historic-type stuff, you may like Newnan, GA. That's about as close as you'll come in GA. I don't know of a real town square in the southeast, but this is close and a lot of transplants from the northeast think it's an extremely quaint town.
In my opinion, if you want a true town square, good schools and a high quality of life, you need to be looking in Iowa. I would be if my DH didn't need to be surrounded by trees and hills...IA is flat!
Anyway, I digress...check out Newnan...may be what you're looking for. There are plenty of websites...just put Newnan, GA into your search engine.
Good luck!

My family is in the process of moving from Florida to Georgia this August. We have visited and fell in love with Thomasville. It’s in South Georgia and prides itself on keeping its southern charm. Can’t walk two city blocks without someone saying “Hi, how ya’ll doing” And as for Christmas, they have an old fashion Victorian Christmas. If you would like to restore an older home then this is the place. For a small town the shopping is great. You’ll not find a better downtown plus, good shopping on the outskirts of town with stores like JC Penny’s and Belk. Thomasville has a population of 25000 and Thomas County 45000. The schools are good and the hospital is one of the best you’ll find. This is in the heart of Bible belt country (BTY we like that) and very family oriented.
