Default Valdosta

Can anyone give me the scoop on Valdosta. Seems like a nice progressive place with culture, restaurants, activities. What is your opinion?

I just moved to Valdosta only 2 weeks ago. I am not so impressed yet. I might like it better once I find a job.

Now don't get me wrong. The town is nice and the people I have met are nice. However, I have not had much luck landing a job.

Did you try applying for some jobs in the near-by cities? - A fair number people in Southwest Georgia who live in Moultrie, Thomasville, Valdosta, Tifton, Albany, or even Tallahassee commute to other towns. The only good thing is you don't face traffic down there like you do up in Atlanta. Good luck!

I just relocated to Valdosta from Texas. It's very different that's for sure. I'm living on base, and everything just seems so spread out here. There's a few good restraunts but the mall isn't so hot. But it IS close to Florida!

I am a young blk/wht 24 yr old lesbian female from New York City. I recently was accepted to VSU to major in Deaf Education. I have read quite a few of the forums concerning racism. I understand that no matter where you go racism is still alive, whether it is blatent or discrete. What is the gay community like in this area? What is the nightlife like? I know it will be nothing like NYC and I am prepared for that but I will be attending this school for at least 3 years so I need to have some kind of comfort. I am a fem (dress like a woman) but many of my friends who will frequently visit me are aggressives (women that dress like boys) how is this regarded in these parts?? Any places to hear r&b or reggae or hip hop??

My main goal is education, but everyone needs to unwind at certain times. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I was born in Valdosta and have lived most of my life here. There is really no overt racism just a few old men who might make the occaisional tastless comment. The town has really developed is terms of shopping ,and resturants in the last few years. Valdosta State has one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, and I've seen quite a few. and to answer an earlier question there is a suprisingly large gay/lesbian population on campus with clubs and organizations dedicated to just that. There are numerous venues for music of all kinds and plenty of bars and places to go dance. Also a pretty good art scene and tons of sports to watch and places to play them. Valdosta is a safe and inexpensive place to live, where southern hospitality is still alive.

Graduated from VSC (now VSU) back in the 90's. While things have changed considerably since I spent any time there, I am sure life in Valdosta has improved.

I enjoyed my time in Valdosta and have no complaints about the school or the city. I am a black male who did not see the racism mentioned in the earlier posts.
