The thing is... other violent crimes in Augusta are at or below the national avg... except violent rape..it's off the charts in Augusta.. well ahead of Atlanta in per capita terms. Just curious why this is? I would somewhat except these numbers in a major college town.. but Augusta isn't realy a major college town like Athens.. and Augusta's numbers of violent rape are much higher than Athens. Maybe someone has some insight into this phenomenon.

I can bet you the rape statistics are suppressed in a university town like Athens, and I wouldn't trust the stats.

I spent some time browsing through the stats (provided by this site) and found some interesting stuff in regards to this topic. In regards to rape, on a national level, not one Georgia city/town showed up any where in the stat lists I saw. The only Augusta I saw was in ME.. The point is, some place in every state is the worst in regards to violent rape when looking at a state by state list. But the truth is, in the national scope of things, Augusta, Ga. does not even show up. I am sure if you dig deep enough you will find some other city that is the states worst at something... its a given. Perhaps Waycross has the largest cockroach population per one thousand residents. I sense an agenda here.....

Augusta doesn't show up on national lists.. because it is one of the few cities that does not report its crime numbers to the FBI..Atlanta reports certain stats, but not all. The Augusta-Richmond County sheriff's department does provide crime stats on its website. From those numbers, Augusta leads the state in violent rapes (per capita) and when compared nationally.. is actually quite bad. In other categories of violent crime Augusta actually is safer than the national average.. but as far as rape.. it really stands out.. it's just an interesting thing.

So, what you are saying is... there is no real way of telling which place is worse. My real point was that EVERY state has a worst something (insert whatever category here). Since we cannot rely on the FBI stats, here are some of my guesses. Cordele is the most likely place to be killed by a watermelon per capita. Waycross is the most likely place to get bit by an alligator per capita. Fort Valley is the most likely place to bite into a bad peach per capita. Ellijay is the most likely place to find a worm in an apple per capita. I think you get my point.

Most jurisdictions do report their stats.. those that don't are the rare exception. Atlanta does release numbers on violent rape.. bvut some property crimes are not reported. The Augusta numbers come from the sheriff's department.. and they show that Augusta is ahead of even Atlanta when it comes to violent forcible rape... IT's a crime category where Augusta sticks out like a sore thumb.. and it shouldn't be trivialised by comparing it to someone being hit by a watermelon.. Having a close family member who was a rape victim in Augusta.. it's very traumatic.. and not something to be made light of.. People who live in Augusta or who travel there need to ask what are the local authorities doing to address this problem? It is out of control.
