Thank you very much for your replies,
wxjay- Teachers only make ~47k a year in Boston, I can't see myself ever being able to afford to buy a home (with as high as the cost of living in Boston is) on that much a year, at least while I'm single. I'm sure there are many teachers in Boston (probably single like me) that live there, but I'm sure that they would be extremely hard pressed to do anything other than rent.
TLC1988- I'll look into Gainesville/ Oakwood, I don't have any experience with either city (and have only heard of Gainesville in passing). The area sounds like it would be a good place to live with several activities going on that I'd enjoy.
Thanks again for all of your replies! It will definately be at least 2-3 years before I can move, but I'm looking forward to investigating my options.

Well it depends what you get for the money and is it worth it to you.I could by a 1 bedroom condo in Buckhead for what i pay for a 3bd3bath house on the southside of Atlanta. Some people dont want to be on the southside though.

South Atlanta is very nice. Not all parts are bad. Peachtree City and Newnan are nice, but it would be a good commute to Atlanta.

You've obviously never lived in Boston. Maybe they teach and their spouse is an executive or a high wage earner. There may be single teachers living in and working in Boston, but I bet they are renting and have one or more roommates.

Yes they are, but people often lump them all together with the bad parts.Like everything in south Atlanta and down 100miles is all wasteland.LOL

You are right about the transportation. Columbus resident since '62. It really sucks, if you are becoming more handicapped. I am trying to move to North GA. I can see the writing on the wall for Columbus. All the attempts at gentrafying it are going no where. All that money on a river walk, and its too dangerous to get much use of. I know I'm out of here somehow. When I lost my car, and talked to friends who walk or even are on bikes..the horror stories. (idiots threw trash and milkshakes on me going to the bus stop) I mostly stay in my now empty little apartment. I will get out of here though. Best of luck to you

Hey, Art Teacher....I just remembered. Savannah. I was there about a year and a half. My son was born there. They have a big art school there, I remember. You may want to look into it. Unfortunately, I think Savannah is another one of those cities where you are OK if you are rich, and not so good otherwise. You may be able to 'make do'. Been a while for me, but I would look into Savannah. Yep, its hotter than the hinges of hell there too.
