Default About Winder, GA

I am a single woman in my early 60's and am considering a move to Winder to be closer to my daughter and grandchildren who live in Gwinett. I've visited there just once and thought it was a charming little town but I have so many questions and I hope some of you can help me make a decision. If I do make the move it will be to the older, historic part of downtown Winder since I'm an old house buff. Does anyone know much about this area? What kind of people live there? Would they be likely to welcome a newcomer? Is the neighborhood safe or is there a lot of crime? Is the area experiencing positive growth and renewal? I'm politically liberal and not a church goer. I realize that would not be typical of the area but would people still be accepting? I'll truly appreciate any information you can give me.

There was a thread about Winder I remember reading about a few months ago. I found the link to it: http://www.city-data.com/forum/georg...g-about-3.html Most people agree that Winder is not a place I would choose to live in. It follows the railroad, and most towns like that are older and run down. If you want to live near Gwinnett, I would suggest Jackson County. Cities like Hoschton and Jefferson are much, much nicer.

I lived in Gwinnett, worked in Athens and went to church in Winder three years ago. I have friends who live in the historic section who have redone two homes there and love it, but know that it is only a temporary move for them. Great, quiet place to raise children until they get to be school-aged, but you can't send children to school there. Winder is very poor, economically speaking, and the town government runs like a small town government, slow. The people are nice, but definitely not in a hurry for anything. I could not have lived there because it's just too far from everything I've come to appreciate: people with teeth, a decent grocery store and a place to shop for decent clothes (the closest mall is in Athens). I loved Gwinnett, although as Atlanta sprawls, Gwinnett is getting sucked into the big-city black hole.
