Hi,
My husband and I are moving to Athens in the next month. He will be working at UGA and we are currently looking for homes. We have dogs and cats and would like a home with at least an acre in a quiet peaceful place. We're not anti-subdivision but we would prefer a more rural setting or least a subdivision with large lots and some trees! Does anyone have any suggestions??? We have seen a few more rural homes in Nicholson and Hull. Any advice on these cities/towns? We are not opposed to driving 20-30 minutes. Thanks for any help you can give us.

I've lived in Winterville for the past three years and would definitely recommend the area. Look around Winterville and towards Hull, Colbert, Arnoldsville, in Oglethorpe and Madison Counties. The east side of Athens is quieter and less congested than the west side, and there are plenty of stores and restaurants.

Default Athens

I would agree with Winterville and beyond into Madison County. I am still surprised that anyone in this day of 4 buck gas wants to commute. Also, you simply do not have the services in other counties that you have here in ACC e.g. fire, police, medical, city water, convenience. There are subdivisions in ACC that have very large lots. I live in one just a block off the busline, 2 miles from walmart and lowes etc. I can walk, bike or bus to everything I use including doctor, dentist, vet, grocery stores (4). Also, the houses in my neighborhood are under 200K. No children that I have seen. Mostly established, older folks who mind their own business.

Good luck in your search.

Default try this

Since the Madison-Morgan County area tends to be a little bit more expensive, I would recommend looking in the Lexington-Washington corridor. Not so many people are searching for homes in these areas, and as a younger couple (I'm assuming), you should find it much more affordable. Especially compared to trying to buy west of Athens--toward Atlanta.

I think east of Athens still has the true rural look and pace.

I will be looking in that area. How big are the lots in the subdivision? I was hoping to find 1-3 acres..

If you're looking for more house and land for your money, look around the town of Comer. It's in Madison County. It's way less expensive to live there, especially, if you're looking for a home midway between two other locations. It's close enough to Athens for doctors and groceries to make life bearable.
