I've been looking at buying a condo in Lake Arrowhead in Waleska, which is a gated community.
This may be a REALLY dumb question , but does anyone know if there are alot of college students living in that community? (Reinhardt College is 13 minutes from Lake Arrowhead.)

If anyone can advise me on this, I sure would appreciate it.

A few years back I was told by a sherriff's deputy who is a graduate of Rhinehardt College that a lot of the homes in that community are rented to college students. I was also told that there were quite a few meth labs in the community.

Thanks for confirming clsmith -- I figured that was the case being that the college was a stone's throw from Lake Arrowhead. Meth labs? Thanks for the info -- I googled the topic, and here is a link (you have to scroll down to find the bit about the illegal meth labs in Waleska).

Interesting article. I used to live off of Sam Nelson Road and had to move because my neighbor moved a meth addict into her house and he began stalking me and attacking my horses and dog while I was at work. I'm been flamed for talking about it on this board so I'm glad you posted that link.

No, you were "flamed" for making the entire county sound like some junkie-infested, crime-ridden wasteland, when couldn't be further from the truth.

Lake Arrowhead in my opinion is a very nice area, beautiful country, nice homes. Rheinhart College is a tiny school. If there are some college kids there, I wouldn't think it would be overrun with them. Its not like you would be moving next to UGA. I lived close to Kennesaw State which is now the 3rd largest campus in the state and didn't feel like I was overrun with college kids.

I think you got an overly critical response, would look for others to confirm my opinion.

Thank you for the info, Saintmarks. I appreciate your candid reply. I wasn't aware that Rheinhart College was a tiny school.... you were correct -- I was thinking it was a medium-to-large size university.

50something,

I believe Rheinhart is affiliated with the Methodist church. It was only in the 80s or 90s that it went from being a 2 year college to a 4 year school. I would be surprised if there were 1,000 students total and I am sure a lot are still commuters from the parents' house. Waleska itself is barely a one stop light town with a population around 750.

Another thing I remember recently about Lake Arrowhead. The last Extreme Home Makeover to come to GA helped a lady finish the house she started but couldn't complete. I didn't see it in person but the AJC did a nice photo spread on their website.

Lake Arrowhead has been a gated community for several decades, probably originally started in the 60s, so there could be some older homes that might have become neglected, but all in all, anytime I visited there, I thought it was a lovely community. I am in TX now and haven't been there in at least 5 years, so I might not have the most recent facts, but due to its location in Cherokee County where everything is developing on a more upscale side, and its distance from any built up area, I just can't see that it could have reduced itself to a slum like the first poster made it seem like.
