Yeah, most of those sound very familiar. The downtown development authority hasn't been moving fast, but there's visual improvement.

To be honest Greenville is very small, compared to Ga 2nd tier cities they are all 2-3 times larger in size and pop with Greenville having a population approximately around 60,000 people, excluding the metro which the City of Greenville only represents approximately ten percent of it's metro population. Greenville Kind of reminds me of Warner Robins but with Richmond,Va Metro.... What sales Greenville to developers and help it Support some of these big city amenities is because it half way and close proximity between two major cities and has a metro with a large pop.....
I'm curious to know how Greenville would stack up if it had a metro of normal cities of 60,000.... I hate to always highlight Macon, But the city has created a division called New town Macon which goals are to accomplish the same objectives Greenville has stated to with it's DT.... Which Macon has made a lot of the same improvements DT. Also With Macon's centralized state location, Interstates access, being a rail line crossroad in Ga and proximity to Atlanta it want be long before even larger development will take place in DT Macon which already has 4 projects underway now and those will only encourage more to come.....
Guys check out NewTown Macon - Home and check out the Downtown master plans for Macon....

• Close proximity to Atlanta and Harts field
• proposed ATL-MAC commuted rail project
• Middle Ga Regional airport being chosen for a reliever
• Major Interstates access (I-75,475,16)
• rail line crossroad
• access to Savannah seaport from I-16
• centralized state location and direct access
• Macon-Warner Robins Metro is 450-500,000 combined
• trade area of over 600,000

Here you go G-man, probably one of the reasons Greenville is such a cool place:

Most Generous Mid-Size Cities, By Volunteer Hours
1. Provo, Utah 63.8%
2. Iowa City, Iowa 45.1%
3. Madison, Wis., 42.3%
4. Greenville, S.C. 41.0%
5. Ogden, Utah 41.0%

Top 5 Most Charitable U.S. Cities and States - Study on Volunteering in America - thedailygreen.com
State & City Rankings - Volunteering in America
lace

And of the cities mentioned on this thread Augusta tied (actually beat by .1%) Chattanooga and beat Columbia and Charleston. My question is what Greenville does to get so much more volunteer work than Columbia and Charleston?

Just for the record Columbus rated nearly at the top for accepting fed, state and local handouts as well as eating what they shoot.

Augusta ranked at the top in a ranking for having the fattest women per capita.. it was barely beat out by some city in Mississippi.. I wantto say Hattiesburg or Tupelo.. not sure which. WhenI find the ranking I'll post the link.

Regarding Chattanooga's "rise to fame" that someone brought up a few posts ago...

Aside from the fact that Chattanooga has had a few leaders who did think ahead (which many cities don't), one of the biggest things that actually helped them is geography - location.

Chattanooga is only a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Atlanta, Nashville, and Knoxville. Literally millions of people who can drive to downtown Chattanooga for a simple "day trip". Get there before lunch, see the town and some attractions, and still be back home by dark. Once they got the ball rolling with the Aquarium, poof - that was all it took to get them coming (with their $dollars$), and it quickly grew from there.

So, it was their city leaders who can take credit for getting it rolling with the Aquarium, and simply their location to other cities that keeps things on an upward swing. It's a nice town overall - still lots of cleaning up to do in some areas which they should focus on more now, but it has a lot going for it that other cities of its size don't have because they don't have the large population bases close enough to them to draw day or weekend tourists from easily.

We care about our citizens and the look of our community. Plain and simple. Oh and I see Yerocal forgot about the annexation laws again.

I think someone was bored when they made this thread. How does really great cities like Savannah and Charleston get mixed up with Mobile, and Disgusta for gods sake.

Its funny how different people see things so different. I recently spent a year in Mobile working and I have only good memories of the whole experience. Fishing, cruise port, fresh seafood, beaches right down the road, and a downtown that is much more active than any of the others that I have spent time in. Mobile now has the tallest building in Alabama, completed just over a year ago. The top 25 floors all have tenants now... in less than a year and a half. The first nine floors are motel rooms that are completely booked up for years to come during Mardi Gras, and nearly full any ole time. Name one other city on that list that can pull that off. Based on my experiences living and working there for a year, I would not even place Savannah and Charleston in the same catagory. And Savannah and Charleston are two of my favorite places to visit. And I even think Mobile has a two story mall... which is the real barometer. At least around here.

By the way, Mobile and Charleston have a common bond. The U.S.S. Hunley (civil war submarine) was built in Mobile, and shipped by train to Charleston. It was launched and in a very short time promptly sank, killing all on board.... but that is besides the point. The two cities will forever be linked.
