Y'all come on now, that Pastor was telling the truth. Alma is about as close to Orlando as Waycross is to New York City. As you can see from the way they attacked, he is right. It is close-minded. I know. I am from there and now live in Orlando, and I thank God for it everyday. SInce it was written in 2006, let's wonder if person still lives there, or ran screaming away.
I grew up and have lived in "big cities" my entire life...while they offer some conveniences, they also offer crime, blight, and TRAFFIC. I recently met and fell in love with a woman from South Georgia. I travelled back there to meet her and her family, and I immediately fell in love with the charm that is Southern Georgia. I've applied for a job in Alma, and pray that we (yep, the woman I fell in love with!) will have a chance to live, work, and play in Alma! If given the chance, we're both looking forward to getting to know the city and the people who live there....
I was just being honest. I didn't say folks in Alma were stupid, just uneducated...statistically true. As for the person who suggested I educate my "flock"...tried, I just reminded them of the things they said were sacred and true and got ran out for it! HOORAY! Kind of proves a point, don't you think? Look at the responses I got! Not at all closed minded? Nah. (Sarcasm implied)
If you only took as much pride in your communities and families as your posts, Alma might not be struggling to survive.
I'll let your responses speak for themselves. PEACE!

Must not be struggling to much they was able bodied and educated enough to run you off. I understand why you left LA too. LA don't want your kind here either.

For what it is worth, I pretty much agree with everything you said. You delivery left a little to be desired... but accurate for the most part. I am in the complete opposite position. I was born in the big city and lived in major metropolitan areas my whole life. I came to rural central Georgia to not fit in, to not become a part of the active community. I cherish being left alone... being considered an outsider. I have had my share of the big city culture, the big city hustle and bustle. I came here to be left alone. I am friendly to the lady who cuts my steaks, who bags my groceries, who sells me gas. None of them will ever be at my house for a cook out. And I theirs. We have a perfect arrangement, me and my community. I knew this when I moved here and it still applies. Quite frankly, I think they are afraid of me because I did not try to fit in (that too quiet neighbor type)... but its all good in my book.
Your accuracy is to be commended, but your delivery needs some work.
Well I guess I could make it sound all pretty and dance around for ya too but considering the fact that you are supposedly a pastor; you ought to be used to all things being fairly blunt and to the point. Sure ain't nothing grand or overly glorious about it. Fact remains that you gave a big s**t eating grin to your congregation and then said I'll pray for ya when you slit their throat. Hopefully you've changed since you were there but from your sarcastic rolling of eyes reluctantancy to even acknowledge the possiblity that you could have been wrong in your way of going about things while there largely suggests otherwise.

Reason: left out a word
You say its okay to be blunt. I was. I am being chastized for it.
As far as slitting my congregations' throat, in fact quite the opposite. I left the secular work force to go to that church, and took a 70% pay cut to go there. I gave them all my time and all my effort.
The church ran me out because of diversity of culture and ethnicity that attended our events and services.
Oh, and by the way let me know what you think about interracial marriage. See Moses.
I must say that I did not realize that people would be offended by sharing the truth. The people are uneducated, THEY ARE NOT STUPID! Some of the most brilliant folks I've ever met live in the Alma area. I am truly sorry that I upset anyone, but I feel like your attempting to punish me for a stereotype others have imposed. I do feel like your contradicting yourselves in the process.
Do you think some of these responses are because people feel like many outsiders look down on them? I do not.
It takes a strong person, a person who has to work hard and persevere to succeed in S. GA. There are several obstacles that most rural Georgians overcome, obstacles that would stop city folk in there tracks.
Rural Georgia is full of folks with tons of character and integrity. Tons of fight. Good people.
I didn't ever think that education was a measure of a person. I am sorry for those of you that do.

Whatever works for the two involved; and, off topic. Then again so is much of what had been posted.
Now that you speak a little more you seem like a decent minded person that still has a lot to learn. Don't we all!The pay scale isn't of concern if that's what you want to do. Still sounds fully loaded. Good intentions of someone that struggles with their decisions. It can only get better for ya when you accept those decisions and intentions. Stop being offended by those that openly judge you the harshest, your captive audience. I'm sure whatever happened there will one day seem by and large minor.
I still throughly enjoy Alma though and it's little character flaws are part of what makes it so great. It is way too individual a place to lump it into one catagory. Small towns aren't made for everybody which is why they are small.
Alma has loads to offer anyone that desires a slower pace of life. Some of finest wiregrass and pine acreage around. The folks are generally nice, I think perhaps that it was more change than you were ready for at the time. I'm sure if you were to go back there you'd find things that you loved & missed. Unfortunately for new preacher those small town churchs seem to be the only ones that will give 'em a chance. Cycle of life though most careers, start small and end small.
