I don't know what I was thinking, I suppose.
I believe one could drive from Buford to Atlanta for an evening easily.
What do you suggest?

'I run an online marketing company from my house, so work is not really an issue - I can do my job from anywhere. I am looking for a few things though. I have a one year old son, so the school system is a big issue. I am also looking for somewhere close to the city, but not right in the city. '
'As far as what par tof the state, I just don't know. I don't know enough about Georgia to know that answer. At this moment, I am just starting my search for a new place. Somewhere to raise my son is basically the ultimate deciding factor - good schools, lower crime, decent cost of living. A huge metor are is not the ansewr. I would like a more rural setting, but something where I could be in the city with a relatively short commute if I wanted to get out for the night, etc. I think more traditional beliefs with less diversity has both good and bad sides to it. As far as the climate - pretty much anywhere I don't have to deal with the harsh winters like it is here.'

It is all helpful, but I agree - a 40 minute drive is a bit much, even for a night out. I am looking for something in a rural setting, with a short (10 - 20 minute) commute to something larger; want a major hospital relatively close (raising a boy can have its dangers), have to have pretty top notch schooling, need housing a bit cheaper than 100K though I think - I am just starting out with a one year old and am not sure that may not be above my means; and would like shopping/dining/things to do pretty close so. Maybe I am asking too much!

You are not asking too much! Savannah, Georgia, is the best place to live. Surrounding choice cities have good quality, such as Richmond Hill, Pooler, or the much more relaxed, rural town of Hinesville. The ocean is also close, and beach trips are no problem. All of Southeast Georgia is beautiful, and the humidity makes the weather warmer all year long. It has not snowed in the area for almost ten years. Richmond Hill is about 15 minutes from Savannah, and Savannah is home to a great children hospital, called St. Jude's. Hinesville is a little further away, but has well funded schools. Hinesville is a little more rural. Savannah is the most beautiful city in Georgia, and is also a great place to live, if you choose to live in a city. In it is the house of the Girl Scout's Founder, the home of the author of Treasure Island, tons of squares and parks, and the phenomenal River Street. Do you like Paula Dean? Her restaraunt is based here. Shopping is a blast. Quality of life is also great, if you live in the suburban area. I lived in the area, and I can tell you quality of life has never been better.

I agree that Savannah is a nice area. The Georgia coast is probably my favorite part of Georgia. The weather also seems much nicer there than Atlanta in the winter.

You might want to focus on Bryan and Effingham counties, which might include Rincon and/or Richmond Hill, it might be easier to find housing. Savannah is a beautiful, historic city with 21C challenges in many areas, specifically public education.
There is a Savannah forum and if you want more FYI on this area that would be the place to post.

I rarely visit the NW quadrant and don't know how to describe the less developed areas that emerge 'here and there'. Perhaps well outside the city limits of Smyrna and other municipalities. I am a white-knuckle driver on that side of town and focused on defensive driving most of the time.
I really couldn't grasp what the OP wanted since she said she virtually knew nothing about Georgia and I know zero about Erie, PA, except that it is cold, very cold. That is where the OP is located.
She said 'rural', but indicated she would like to be near 'a city'. What kind of city and how near?
For instance, in North GA----you can drive for 10-20 miles and see nothing but pastures, cows and a few little houses. Then you come to a town, which may have several places to eat and a few motels.

Houston County
I've alson heard good things about Houston County. Is that Warner Robins area? Is that area family friendly, low crime, racial problems. I want to move out of Cobb county at the end of the year. What can I look forward to if I consider Houston County? I'm black and a christian who just love people and very family oriented. Can I expect that there?

Jackson is a great town!
The city of Jackson in Butts County is a great place to live! It is located 45 mins south of Atlanta and just 1 county south of Henry County, which is becoming very crowded. The growth is making it's way here, too, which makes it a great time to buy and move to Jackson. There are 3 brand new elementary schools and lots of new businesses are coming to town. We are close to the BIG city, but still have the country feel.
My husband just got finished remodeling a 5 bedroom Victorian located 1 block from the Jackson square. You can see the house at Flat Fee MLS Listing Atlanta | For Sale By Owner GA | Discount FSBO Real Estate | Flat Fee FMLS. Just search by city, Jackson. The house is located at 263 N. Oak St.
If you decide to take a trip to Georgia, let us know. We'd love to show it to you!
Susan

We are looking to relocate as well. We have three kids ranging from grade (K - 5). My husband is working on starting his own business and working from home. I am currently an office assitant and would like to do the same work there. We are looking to buy a home but would prefer to start out in an apartment or duplex. We have looked at Buford, GA, Athens, GA, and Warner Robins, GA. What are your views on these?
