Unhappy Biracial family temporarily in Albany...

My son who is caucasian and his wife, who is black have two small children, they are stationed in New Orleans, La and have been temorarily evacuated to the Marine Corp base there in Albany until further notice due to Gustav, now I am fully aware that this is the south but where can they go that they won't get mean stares and made to feel uncomfortable? When they got stationed in New Orleans they found some areas which were uncomfortable but they quickly found out where they could shop and not feel like someone was watching their every move. Now my daughter-in-law doesn't want to go out to Walmart because she doesn't want anyone staring at them, no one knows how long they'll have to be there until we see what happens with Gustav. Can anyone tell me if areas that are alittle more racially diverse?

Thank you,
kelly

i sure hope that for the most part they will be treated kindly kelly. my son's father (who is white) is married to a black woman... they have been married for almost 18 years... after a couple of difficult years, we have all gotten along for the sake of my son who will be 18 in a couple of weeks.

they do get some looks and whispered comments, but for the most part, they are accepted in tallahassee where they live. they have also visited me in middle georgia (not too far from albany) with no problems.

i pray they get to meet the kind and gentle people that i know albany has to offer and are accepted for the people they are... and not judged on the color of their skin!!

As someone who has lived in Albany about 40 years (most of my life), Please do not worry. Honestly, they may get a few "turned" heads, but on the most part they probably will not even get that. That is something very common here.

Tell your DIL please, not to worry! Just go about her business and hold her head up high! I would be soooo surprised if she got anything more that a few double takes, IF she even gets those!

Listen, this may be the deep south, but Albany does not have a "small-town" mentality when it comes to something like a bi-racial couple with kids. Albany has enough bad points on so many other things, but in my opinion, this is not one of them!

Wishing them happiness!

Kat

They are going to get stared at no matter where they go, so they might as well suck it up and get used to it. Albany, or any larger town/city like it, will be a better place for them than in a smaller community. Just remember, the smaller the town = the smaller the minds.
