Going to college - Macon or Savannah
I have spent my whole life living in the outlying area of northeast Metro Atlanta and am trying to decide between GCSU in Milledgeville (Macon) or Armstrong Atlantic State University (Savannah). Which city has more "things to do"? Which one is cleaner and safer? Which has better traffic situations? Although I have lived in GA my whole life, I am not familiar with these areas, and any information would be appreciated.

Armstrong is a highly regarded school and is reasonably priced. What are you planning to study?
Macon doesn't have a beach nearby. Both cities have similar crime and traffic problems.
Georgia Southern is also a decent regional university and has less traffic and a lower crime rate. It's only an hour from Savannah.

I am planning to study business, but that may change. I value free time very heavily, so I am looking for a place to go to school where I can make the most of my down time. Of course, this costs money, so I need to be able to find a job, too, preferably in a clothing store since that is where I have experience.

I'd say Savannah, then. The access to downtown, the ocean, rivers and marshes probably exceeds the recreational options of Macon and Milledgeville. Then there's the two malls for clothing stores employers and other odd ones scattered around.

Milledgeville doesnt have anywhere near the crime of Macon.....its about 60 miles from Macon and the city is thriving because of the college...it is a college town.
Its alot less expensive to live there than Savannah...and no, there is no beach, but Lake Sinclair offers the college folks in the are plenty of entertainment, as well as the bars in the area. Not to mention your just a hop from Athens....

Listen to Ellie here. I've lived in both of these places and as far as jobs, safety and cleanliness go they are pretty equal. Go for fun and go to Savannah.

LOL....which one has the better business program? There is a lot to do in and around Savannah. The crime, I've heard, is terrible. I have only ventured into Savannah to go to the beach and a couple of times to view the shops and such. I have only passed through Macon, so I can't say anything good or bad about it. Good Luck with your decision.

I just remembered that the business school in Savannah is part of Savannah State University, not Armstrong.

I am graduate of GC&SU, so I get all the stats in my alumni magazine. The SAT average at GC&SU is 1130(3rd highest in the UGA system) and the retention rate(freshmen who come back for their sophomore year is 84% third in the state as well. Forget any preconcieved notions if you haven't followed GC&SU since 1996. Armstrong academic standards are not even close GC&SU. GC&SU is closer to UGA than Armstrong is to GC&SU. Look it up and you will see the facts. Armstrong is a commuter college with no campus life and a SAT average that barely breaks 1000. Of course GC&SU has some down sides and is a suit case college to an extent, but it's the closest thing to a classic college experience to UGA within the state system. If you can't get into UGA or your looking for a cheap alternative to the private colleges GC&SU is a good choice. It's considered to be HANDS DOWN the third best college in the system behind GT and UGA.
