To be honest "WanderingImport" really had the fairest most unbiased input. These are both 2 mid-sized cities, Its some nice things about both cities, but nothing too mind-blowing great about either. Regardless of what anyone in Columbus will tell you, because of the interstates and location, Macon feels like a larger and more "on the go area" compared to columbus.

Macon and Columbus are basically the same, but I give Macon the edge because of the interstates and location

Because both towns can become "boring"...I guess you can say its better that atleast we have 2 malls in Macon...compared to 1 singled floored one in Columbus

As far as someone mentioning the arts, I cant really say Macon offers more than Columbus in that area, but I know our musical history is much more impressive, we have the sports and music hall of fames, tubman museum, ocmulgee national monument, museum of arts and science, etc. I dont know what Columbus has to offer to compare with that, maybe they do, but I havent saw it.

You have to excuse some people on here like Bulldawgfan, as he is RUNNING one incident in the Macon Mall in the ground, where some teens got into an altercation and some chairs got throwin in the eating area.

All I have to say about that is if that one incident is enough to keep you away from the Macon Mall, then the day a jewelry booth in Columbus' Peachtree Mall was turned over during a fight (They had to close the mall early) should be enough to keep you away from there.

To promote any one of those stories to describe either mall is crazy, as you can shop in Macon Mall and Columbus's Peachtree Mall just fine......ours is much bigger anf 2 floors though.

As for the Crime, It would appear Macon is slightly more dangerous than Columbus, but just from riding around both cities the "ghetto".."nice"...and "so-so" areas in both seem to be about the same. UNLESS YOU ARE IN THE GHETTO, both of the cities are very inhabitable and comfortable to live in peacefully. I'm from East Macon which is basically a mixed income area made up mostly of middle class but a couple of "ghettos" here and there and these shootings dont even effect me or play in any part of my life because I'm not in those areas directly.

To sum it up realistically,

Macon and Columbus both are plenty ghetto, but have lots of nice areas to choose from as well.
Both can get pretty boring.
They are both typical mid sized city in MOST aspects.
What makes Macon different is our interstate access, location, musical heritage, and the fact that we have 2 malls (1 double floored) Vs. Columbus' 1 floor mall which isnt even that more impressive than the one in our suburb city (Warner Robins). Our Skyline is much more "urban" as well. Some may say what I told you about malls and skylines is petty, but its something worth mentioning when discussing 2 cities that dont really have many things to just blow your mind.

Put it like this, moving from Macon to Columbus, made me look at Macon much differently as far as being a true urban city is concerned.

A mall doesn't make a city better than the other. Companies, quality of life, entertainment, culture, and job growth make a city better than another. Columbus has all of that...much more than Macon.

Columbus is only 64 miles from Americus and Macon is 78 miles from Americus. Just food for thought.

Hi! I am a newly transplanted Georgian, and I chose to live in Macon. When I asked for advice on this board I got one extreme or another, and a whole lot of angry people =) I came here expecting to find a crime infested hell hole, and found nothing of the sort. There is a lot of competition between Ga 2nd tier cities, and you will probably need to come visit to get a clear view. After visiting this site, I set my sights on Warner Robins for the schools, but after visiting myself I chose Macon because it just seemed less generic than Warner Robins. Bibb county public schools are less than ideal, but there are a ton of private schools that make up for that. While I do not think that this is a big artsy community, I have found that the down town exceeded my expectations. I did choose to live in North Macon, because of crime statistics, but I have not felt unsafe in the 2 months that I have been here. So, that's my 2 cents....Good Luck!

Macon is only (62.9 miles) from Americus on hwy 49 south and lets not make this a Macon Vs Columbus we are supposed to be given these guys some insights on these cities not trying to make the other look better, even if Macon does make a much better choice....the bashing is getting OLD....

ATLCOL...Columbus might have more companies....but as far as culture and entertainment...I dont believe that...and even if it does it isnt recognizable. Nobody is moving to or going to Columbus for its "culture and entertainment"...be serious here.

No, I'm not saying people are pouring into Macon because of our culture and entertainment, but stop actin like Columbus is so great.

The entire city and area is much more "Dead" than the Macon area. I'm not talking about visiting, I've lived in both cities. As I have said before, If you are in your early 20s or Teens, Columbus doesnt have anything at all.

ATLCOL, please tell me this "entertainment and culture" Columbus has that dwarfs what is available in Macon, because I just didnt see it there.

Oh, just to set the record straight, for me it isnt about "bashing" or wanting these "2nd Tier City Vs. 2nd Tier City" affairs. Its just that I've noticed an arrogance about Columbus promoters and some of these guys bashing of Macon, but after living in both cities, I dont see why they think they are so much better than Macon, and on a level with Augusta or Savannah.

I'm a realist, and its not that Macon has SO much to brag about, but Columbus certainly does not as well.
Being arrogant and snobby is bad enough, but its worse when you act that way and REALLY dont even have a reason to be.

kstumpfuller, If I were working in Americus, personally I think Macon and Columbus would probably be too far to drive from everyday, but If you must choose between then the two just refer to the post of the "WanderingImport" person. He/She sums it up very nice, and realistically.

Both people from Macon and Columbus can list museums, parks, art centers, opera house, etc. so they cancel each other out, you can find those in both cities.

The fact that you are looking for more of an urban place, Macon's Interstate, location and being closer to ATL just make Macon feel bigger and part of something more urban than Columbus and its area.
