Our family is moving to Tifton within the next 4 months. Is there any area you would recommend staying away from as far as house-hunting goes? We have a son who will be going into 9th grade...anything bad we should know about the public school? Does anyone have any thoughts on Grace Christian School as an alternative? We're coming from New York, but we've lived in Lowndes and Gwinnett counties before, so we already know about the heat, bugs, and all that.

Weather!! were from California we don’t like hurricanes!!
No large factories as they may cause health risks.
AS CLOSE TO NO CRIME AS POSSIBLE
A little information about my family, we are a black couple in our mid 30’s. We have 3 kids 5, 7, 12. Also we have my mother. We would like a nice diverse area to call home. Not to sound racist but we don’t want to be surrounded by just one ethnicity. I will be working from home and my wife is a nurse so she will try and work at a decent hospital

I was reading your post and wondering why in the world would anyone LEAVE California and MOVE to Georgia???
Then as I read your question further, I noticed you are a black couple.
Now, that explains why you wanna move here.
ATL caters to blacks and focuses on AA culture so you will love it here!! lol

I don't know of any negatives w/ tifton's public schools.
I do know they keep their 9th grade in a separate facility, not on the HS campus, which many say is better for the students.
As for private schools; check into tiftarea academy.

In Georgia in general, in the Atlanta metro, or where?
Many of the neighborhoods in southern Cobb County are quite diverse, for example.

Oconee County, just outside of Athens might fit your criteria. The whole Athens area is very diverse, influenced by the presence of the University. There are several good regional hospitals in the area also. The music and entertainment scene in Athens is great, again, influenced by the presence of the university, it is the birth place of groups like R.E.M., B-52's, and is just as diverse as the area. Dining is good and shopping is ok. For big venue events, you will have to go to the greater Atlanta area, but, it is not as far as it looks at first. There are no large factories in the area (providing that you mean a large factory is some place having thousands, or even many hundreds, of workers.)
I am also a transplanted Californian (via Seattle, Portland and Central Kentucky). Hurricanes are not much of a problem, but, there are tornadoes. I still haven't decided which bothers me more, earthquakes, of which I have been through several, or tornadoes, which I have not been through.
Your price range will get provide you a large choice of homes around here.
