I guess everyone is entitled to thier opinion. Some are just more open, respectful and hospitiable than others..Thanks everyone for the shares. I am not detered from coming and visiting your wonderful state and hopefully I to will make GA my home..and when I am asked what I think of Floridians or others coming I will share my heartfelt opinions and not my bias or judgements of a group of people that I dont even know..How sad that others dont share the same compassion...And there are many people that have moved from GA to FL and we welcome them with open arms...Change is good but with change comes some drawbacks no lie there but to blame one state for all another states issues (or perception of ) is just playing a blame game...IMHO..Have a great day Yall....straight from a Fl transplant...
You are right we Floridans in general are some of the most welcoming people welcome everyone with open arms..Northern,from other Southern states,Hispanic,etc..There is little to none discrimination in Broward and Palm Beach counties(I left Miami-Dade out cause it is so heavly Hispanic that maybe that they would not be nice..but an Anglo would have a hrad time geting round culturally)

In Broward county where I live someone can have a thick Southern accent and is treated as good as someone having a thick New York accent or foreing accent..

I guess it is the legacy of massive in and out migration and tourism ..

It's easy to say that no matter where you are from you are a "nice" person who most certainly would respect the locals. However, for many people from Boston or the North East urban areas, or even Florida transplants in general, this is much easier said than done.

Assume that you move to a small town like Morganton Georgia and buy a small house on 7 acres of land with some kids around 10 years old.

How would you answer these questions:

1. Do you have any problem with the neighbors letting their hunting dogs roam wild?

2. Are you a member of the NRA? Do you have guns? Do you like to Hunt?

3. Do you have any problem with your neighbor who lives on 80 acres shooting guns on his property?

4. Are you Catholic? Jewish? Non-religious or atheist? Or some other non-Protestant religion? How are you going to react when someone asks you what church you go to or invites you to their church?

5. How are you going to react when your 10 year old child comes home crying because some of the other kids at school make fun of the way she dresses, talks, acts, etc?

Rural N. Georgia has been a fairly homogenous area for over 150 years, until recently. Most of the natives there are White, Scots-Irish decent, Protestant, religious - compared to many other areas in the country, have a distinctly different dialect and way of saying things from even other Southerners, let alone Northerners.

Moving to Rural North Georgia isn't like moving to Naples Florida from Boston. Just imagine the culture shock of someone born and raised in Murphy North Carolina (just across the border from N. Georgia) moving to say ethnic Brooklyn New York, or liberal Boston Mass, and their 10 year old daughter attending public school or even a Catholic school. Think on that, and then you might start to understand why the local people get upset by an influx of people from places like Boston or Naples.

I really don't mean any dissrespect with what I've written. I just wanted to give a small sampling of some of the genuine fundemental differences between people from different areas of the country that can cause feelings of isolation, resentment, missunderstandings, ridicule, and offense that can sometimes cause strife between a local and a "half-back" - even when both have the best of intentions.
First let me tell you something there are still large tracks of Northern and central Florida that are still living like where you are from.

You are generalizing describing coastal Florida as if all of Florida was like coastal Florida,...t many parts of inland Florida are still like rural Georgia

Second,to give you an example what do you think happened to the original people of North Carolina who lived around the Charlotte area ,who were traditionally like you all and experienced such an urbanization?

I beleive rude people are everywhere it has nothing to do with where you come from. We look forward to making new friends and calling georgia our home. I was born and raised in Miami and you must understand that now we have had people from other places move here looking for a better life after awhile only so many people fit so others move on elsewhere. But that happens in every state. If people are good it doesnt matter were there from and it makes life easier for everyone if people would just get along.

You are right, amybe southern people are less tolerant..

cause lets say as an example Arizona..in the Phoenix-Tucson area there has been a great influx of Northerns and all get along:Northern trasplants, retirees,Californians ,Mexican and Native Americans, seems the West has always been more tolerant...

Even in Mormon Nevada when they changed with Las Vegas...

But it is not only Northern Georgia..for example Mormon Salt Lake City cringes at the thought of a mexican invasion..so does Oklahoma cringe to end up like Texas and even in rural Texas cringe to become like Dallas..

It is a matter of time actually it is the other way around when kids start going to school with different kids they are much more adaptabale ..I saw this happen even in Browrard county, a few years ago western Broward was rural and agricultural as protestant white as Northern Georgia, the people in the area cringed in becoming like Fort Lauderdale.. a few years latter Cooper City and Davie started to urbanize today local children and Hispanics are friends,... and there is even a lot of intermarriage..eventually they delute ...

The old generation will be the ole generation and will not change, but as the generations go by they will adapt..

Believe me if raised together children are much more adaptable..

It is only natural for people to move from place to place from high costs to low costs (the average family moves every 7 years). It is supply and demand, the fundamental thing that our entire economy is built on. If there was a cheaper place coming up, I'm sure they'd bounce right out to it same way.

EDIT: I'd like to add that Georgia, along with the other Southern states will shoot up in prices like Florida soon enough. It is a constant cycle, and an obvious pattern.

Its not the same here. im not saying it will stay that way but we have enjoyed 10 years of peace compared to the hustle bustle Florida living

Why do people think all Florida resembles 4 counties(Dade,Broward,Palm Beach(and still have you gone to Belle Glades? still rural and slow paced) and Hillsbourgh?) out of the 50 something?

about 3/4 of Florida counties are still rural, quite and unexpensive.Have you gone to DeSoto county? Ponce? Leon? Flagler? etc... They are as rural, white ,protestant as rural Georgia.

and even many parts of Dade,Broward and Palm Beach are safe.

I do not know where you lived, but I live in Broward and I do not need a gun in Pompano,in Tamarac,Coconut Creek,etc...

[quote=stuartcoker;1359074]OK Let's consider this without all the blaming who is ruining what.

What do North Georgians think about Floridians buying vacation homes up there? What about Floridians who move there permenantly? Can Floridians find jobs in Blue Ridge, Morganton, Clayton, Toccoa, Hiawassee?

I live in Toccoa and as far as I am concerned come on up. Just don't try and change us. We are North Georgians

You are right in many parts of Florida and Texas(and even in Central Atlanta or Charlotte today) so many Northerns have moved in that it is frowned upon or seen as "hick" to have a southern accent and culture and looked down..

For the most part Georgians,South Carolinians,Alabamans,Mississipians,Louisianians and Arkansans are very proud of there southern culture and would never bend or give in..this makes "yankees" uncomfortable cause they wish everyone would "yankeefy" ..
