I can't tell you about children activities and schools. But Watkinsville is a semi rural horsey area on the south end of Athens. I do know there is a private school or two. There are many new subdivisions going in near the Athens side of the county.

Oconee county is a lovely place to live and I have many friends in the area and they love it of course they are the "horsey set". I think I read in some rag that the county is one of the most desirably areas in the USA or something like that.

You will need to go to Athens for the culture stuff, but it's a short commute. Athens has some pretty good chain and non chain resterants. For the "big stuff" you can always go down to Atlanta.

THe schools are great. Top 5 in the state, without fail.

You'll have to go to Athens for lots of things entertainment and shopping related, but it's no more than 20 minutes in the car to almost anywhere in Athens. So no big deal.

Most of the shopping is either at Epps Bridge or on Atlanta Highway, both of which are 15 minutes from Watkinsville.

Also, an FYI: People in Watkinsville don't say they are from "Watkinsville...", they say "We're from Oconee County".

Also: Atlanta Highway is not the highway to Atlanta; that's Highway 316.

small town south is on a distinguished road
My friend, who currently has 2 teenagers, has raised her children in the Watkinsville area and thru Oconee Cnty schools. She had an opportunity to move out of the area but elected to stay due to schools. Both kids are involved in sports or band and have had good experiences. Watkinsville has some good art happenings and the summer concerts at the Inn are fantastic. Also, they have a terrific Christmas parade! It's nice as a small town, and nice that it's close to shopping and other cultural events around UGA. But it is also growing very rapidly - hopefully, it'll keep the nice qualities.
