Default Rome, GA crime -- safe to go outside

I recently moved to Rome, GA, and am staying with a relative and carpooling to the places I need to go. I want to start walking / biking to some places so I have have a bit of mobility, but I'm worried about the crime. This site says that Rome's violent crime rate is far above the national average, and my aunt worries about the crime in her neighborhood (although to my knowledge she hasn't been robbed while living here).

This post suggests that Rome's crime is heavily localized into a handful of bad neighborhoods, but I can't tell if I'm in one of them or not. Can anyone provide some input that will help me decide whether it's safe to go outside or not?

I clicked the first link and found a rather generic entry about Rome, GA.

Having visited Rome, GA on numerous occasions I know it to be a safe area and am puzzled about the misleading information that was posted.

'Rome's crime rate may exceed GA averages'--or something to that effect. It 'may' not and does not.

If you were not in a safe neighborhood I believe you would notice immediately.

You shouldn't ever leave the safety of your home...and baricade the doors and windows. That would make it safer.

I can't imagine crime in Rome, but I feel safe walking around my neighborhood right outside of Downtown Atlanta.

You know, there are these places called 'police stations', where they know these kinds of things.

Drop by and invite a cop getting off duty to have a cup of coffee.. They might tell you things that wouldn't be 'potically correct' while they're on duty.
