What's Columbus, Georgia like? I've got a good job offer there. What's the crime like? What is Columbus High School like? Thank you!

Columbus High School is a good school. If I'm not mistaken it is a liberal arts magnet school. The top high school in Columbus. Always getting school of excellence awards.

Columbus High School is an excellent school - ranked very high statewide.
Columbus is nice in the fall and spring and hot and humid in the summer.
Ft. Benning borders on the south, the Chattahoochee river on the west, with Phenix city on the other side. 100 miles of all Interstate to the Atlanta Airport. Callaway Gardens in Pine Mtn. is 20mi north. Columbus is larger than it "feels".

I never had a problem the 3 years I was there. We lived off exit 7 on 185. It was centrally located to everything and you had everything off Manchester Expressway. The people were nice and the area was nice. There is plenty of shopping, restaurants, and fun things to do.

I don't like this area at all EXCEPT FOR the schools are great, top notch. I don't particularly like the fact that church is discussed a lot during class though, but it doesn't particularly bother me enough to take the kids out and homeschool them LOL.

Columbus was just named as having the highest rate for auto theft though so the crime probably isn't the best in the state, but it isn't the worst either.

I will tell you the truth about columbus. There are lots of gangs. Drugs are out of control in columbus. I moved here about 1 year ago. I bought a beautiful victorain house in a what was susposed to be a nice area. I have had 2 Break ins and last week there was a drive by shooting across the street from where I live. I used to visit here as a child and it was so nice. now it has turned into a real getto town. its not safe to walk down the street in lots of the areas in town after dark.
There is not one good place to eat in the whole town. mostly buffets and chain type places. there is only one starbucks.

I have found that most of the people here don't really care about anybody or anything.

Across the river in phenix City, its the third world.

When I moved here I hoped it was gonna be my home for the rest of my life now at this point I am counting the days until I get to move away.

IF you find a good job, and do a good job everyone else that you work with will be down on you because you do a good job.

Wow if I didn't know better my husband and I could have written all that, except for the breakins--yet.

Also DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT with any employer regarding relocation here. We did and we are PAYING to leave here sooner. I don't want my kids raised in what I have found to be the most apathetic depressing place I've ever lived.

misplacednga, what area of Columbus do live? I have read about the drive by shootings. One deputy was killed recently on the South East side of town. Like I have said before, if you are moving here and you believe that this city of around 200,000 people is May berry, then you are making huge mistake. This is a city for crying out loud. Do we have crime, well? Yes. Is it out of control? No. I have no idea what you expected when you moved to a city, but most city, towns and counties have crime. If you wanted to get totally away from crime, the best thing to do is move to the moon, because even rural areas have crime. I have live in this city for 18 years and have not had a single break in or any other crime committed against my family or myself. We enjoy the city. I can tell you don't get out much, because if you did you would know that there are a lot of the old Mom and Pop type shops, stores, diners and coffee shops still around. They are the heart and soul of this city and this entire area not the chains. This area consists of the following counties, Muscogee, Harris, Talbot, Chattahoochee, Marion, Harris and Troup in GA; Russel, Lee, Chambers and Macon in Alabama. There is more to this area than Columbus, although it is the largest city here, it is not the only city here. There are other towns and communities such as Auburn, Opelika, Pine Mountain, Buena Vista, Tuskegee, La Grange, Manchester, Warms Springs and others. There are more that 600,000 people in the area who are enjoying area and I am sorry that you can't.

What knew movie theater has opened and closed in a year? Hopefully you can name at least one. Do you believe that Columbus is the only city that have had some failed businesses? You have to have a good business plan not just a good idea.

Are you military? The only reason why I asked is because I see you are counting down the days until you will be able to leave. I use to do the same thing when I was in the military. The old count down thing. I stopped, because it was making me miserable. Then I went out and enjoyed the area where I was stationed at the time (ex Air Force). By the way, an alarm system will keep the criminals at bay while you are out at play.

Crime is everywhere. We have elected a new Mayor who was once and excellent Chief of police. During his tenure as police Chief he all but obliterated the crime rate and he was probably police chief when you were visiting Columbus as a child. We are in the process of hiring and adding more police officers to our streets.

But don't leave our city because you have had unfortunate occurences. We will all pray for you and your family and ask the Lord to put a hedge around you. Stay and help us make this a great place for everyone to live.

Get out more and look at the local government channel and see how interested we citizens are in our community. We are interested in you too and value you as one of our own.
