My hometown of Hogansville is equidistant to Columbus and Atlanta, pop 3,000, lots of unreligious rednecks there, they beat me up in high school (slight exageration for comedic purposes, don't take that too literally).
The county seat of LaGrange is very nice, Grantville to the north is closer to Atlanta and starting to get some spillover suburban growth. Warm Springs and Pine Mountain to the south are nice as well. All of these have great older homes for low prices.
This area is my old stomping ground. You are not going to find a rural area near Atlanta that is not going to have a strong religious overtone, but it is not like EVERYBODY is religious. Many are far from it. The rural southern way of life for those that aren't religious is to respect the institution and the beliefs of those that hold them dear and not come in expecting them to change a way of life to mimic yours.
Don't be upset if someone invites you to church. In the rural south, church is just as much about community and social networking as it is about religious observance.

Cartersville is great, I really like it. But do be aware, especially in light of your original post, that this is a good sized community and has been experiencing suburban spillover growth for some time now. There are quite a number of suburban style subdivisions and big box retail centers reminicent of Cobb County to the south.
If you want a true small town around 5,000 or less that doesn't feel as suburbanish, you would need to go further out.

I agree....
Cartersville is far from being a small country town anymore but is a nice area.

Georgia natives says: Knoxville and Johnson City, TN region for a dozen reasons. GA is high tax and it is going to get a lot worse as the State has to raise revenue to keep this monster going. If you have a choice, TN is best at this stage of history.

Knoxville and Chattanooga are both excellent areas to settle in..
Georgia is without a doubt a high tax state and has been for many years and all you have to do is look at who is handling the money..
