Default What is with all the dirt roads around Statesboro?

DH and I spent Thanksgiving in Savannah and thought we'd go check out some houses for sale in Statesboro. Don't those folks know there's a new invention called paved roads?

Just about every house we looked at..and they were very nice houses..was on a dirt road with big old drainage ditches along the sides.

I guess my real question is is this just the way it's done in the area? Is mud a big problem in the rainy season? In the summer, aren't everyone's cars and houses covered in a cloud of dirt?

paved roads are expensive, and so is maintenance. it takes a lot of tax money to do it, which mean you've got to have enough taxpayers to cover the bill.

we have a lot of them here. there's just not enough money to pave all the roads.

I don't really mean to be critical, but there are plenty of poor people in the north, but all the roads are paved. Is there something about the climate, maybe, that makes paving not as important in the south?

Many side roads in rural Minnesota are dirt/gravel. Certainly the federal, state, and county highways tend to be paved, but not the smaller roads you tend to find every mile or so.

I can't believe written you've that, Gentlearts. This is the stereotypical, most hated, worst thing you can start saying when you move here.

What you're going to get in reply is, "if it's so much better up there, why don't you go back.?"

What is it with people today?

Exactly. This is country/rural living.
Personally, I like the dirt roads. It is a reminder that I am heading back to tranquility after being in the city.
And no, we don't want street lights, we want to see the stars at night !

I lived in South Georgia for many years and I don't believe there is anything as nice as walking down a sandy dirt road barefoot.
Oh by the way Gentlarts, You may hear this too " Delta is ready when you are"

You are all pretty touchy. I live in a rural area and all our roads are paved, OK? I was only asking, how come?
I really am not one to move somewhere and then criticize, but am willing to accomodate to my surroundings.
I will not buy a place on a dirt road, since I have lived for years now without sidewalks and streetlights and such, and want those kind of amenitites again.

i hope you don't think i was being "touchy".

i was trying to give an accurate answer to your question.

it's no big deal; some places have the money to do it, others don't. we don't have enough tax money in south georgia to pave all the roads. a lot of the rural dirt roads only have a few people living on them, and its not really feasible to pave it.

as far as the ones you saw that were actual neighborhoods on a dirt road, i can't answer for that. they could've been started many years ago; we have a couple that are still being built on dirt roads, but they were originally started around 15-20 years ago before the "no subdivision on a dirt road" ordinance.
