Savannah, hands down. Or, if you want something smaller, try Statesboro GA (about an hour from Savannah) or Brunswick, GA.

I think Col. is a great place because you can drive about 4 hrs and be in the Mt./Gulf/Sav. Which ever way you want to go.
We camp a lot.so this a good for us.
We have FDR state park.30 min fron the house.
And West Point lake that has some great COE campgrounds 30 min from the house.
I have pics if you would like to see them .email me

Yes the economy has even touched the camping world.
My husband set's tile for a living and as you know Builder's are not building new home's.
He has set tile in home's of people you probably know or have heard of in our area, but even the higher end home builder's have stopped building.
He has not worked for 2 month's.He is doing a remodel job on the backwater's this week.
Columbus has been hit hard.
I sure hope the new troop's come soon.

Columbus has a lot going for it in the next few years. I expect things will pick up beginning this year. Everywhere there is unemployment, not just Columbus.....

Outdoorman,
Are you still looking or have you made a decision?

Interesting posts! The Columbus area has Lake Harding and lake Oliver For Boating and fishing! The flint River isn't that far away for rafting or Kiyac! pinemountain aint far for hikes and attractions and a Zoo and Callaway Gardens (Beach)! Chatahoochee River is nice and there are alot of events here! Shopping is overall safe with the set aside areas and security but there is a big crime element and drugs! Some Great schools (Northside, Hardaway, & Columbus High)and some poor ones! soilders make up a good percentage of the population here. I think your two choices are good but i know little about savannah! Yet the Columbus area maybe at a safe distance from the coast if a major storm were to come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^1
Also much of Fort Benning is being or been up graded (infastructure)! I helped do such. We will have 3 additional burgades soon so that will add to the productivity of Fort benning and Ft. benning is like the best Ft. in the South right along with that of Savannah!
Many of these posts dont know what they are saying about Columbus! Perhaps they just want to speak and be heard!

Both are good - Columbus has Pine Mountain (very nice) and a 15 mile Riverwalk (run or bike) - I don't know the town that well.
Savannah - I lived for a while - liked it - the town motivates people to run and bike - with shopping and many parks near the outdoor shopping and historic district downtown - it is energizing. You have the beach and Riverwalk but no Mountain - Jacksonville is not too far, but same type of town.
Columbus is a few hours from Panama City Beach - and is 1 or 2 hours from Atlanta.
Savannah is fast paced socially versus Columbus may be less progressive - how much less (I don't know) Overall Columbus offers more variety - but Savannah is special. (Don't know - lol)

I agree with inquisitivelycharming. The two cities are different and both have their own unique characteristics.
