Everything Columbus to name to get into, Macon has as well. Macon has something Columbus doesnt have though. The feel of a city. Columbus = extra country

Just got back from Macon.....nothing special at all. Only reason it feels like a city is because of the interstates. Once you get off that it feels very small.

TOO YOU, And who going to take your word, you wouldn't tell the truth if you had too, you don't want give any of us Macon people the benefit of the doubt. There is no one on this forum that well tell that Macon has a small feel, but YOU.....On the other hand ask that same questions about Columbus and see what the answer will be.....lol
A VERY SMALL FEEL FOR A CITY WITH POP OF ALMOST 200,000,( thanks to Consolidation), NOT MUCH HAPPENING, LACK INTERSTATE ACCESS, RETAIL, DINING CHOICES AND ETC. FOR A CITY OF IT SIZE.... there you have i answered it for everyone else.....

Columbus has the same things as Macon if not more. Your Circuit City closed, almost all of of your Starbucks have closed, the hospital is bleeding money, your mall is bankrupt and will eventually close....come on man face the facts. Macon needs to get its act together soon....if not things are going to get bad in 2009. Even if Macon consolidated it would still have 40,000-50,000 less people than Columbus. Don't forget BRAC is bringing an additional 35,000-40,000 to Columbus by 2012. That will be the largest economic impact that GA has seen in years. Don't forget Kia right up the road too which is creating 6,000-8,000 new jobs. That doesn't even count the other jobs that will come to support those jobs. Macon is not that bad of a place, but it still has a way to catch up to Columbus, Augusta, and Savannah.
BTW, there are 2 interstate expansion plans that will come through Columbus. I-14 which will benefit Macon, and the extension of I-185 from Columbus to Tallahassee. Both have studies going on now.

Give examples of why you think that. Interstates (like Macon has) doesn't make a city urban. How can a city of just 100,000 people feel urban????

ATLCOL1, a better question is how can a city of nearly 200,000 feel as dead as Columbus. I have NEVER spent time in or traveled through a city with more than 120,000 let alone 200,000 that feel as "country" as Columbus. This includes Macon, Augusta, Savannah, Montgomery,Huntsville AL, Birmingham,Tallahasse,Chattanooga, Dayton OH,Greensboro NC,Ft. Lauderdale FL, etc. Even Several cities with smaller populations than Columbus look and feel bigger. Macon is more compact than Columbus, has more traveled interstates and to me the different major roads within the city feel busier than the ones in Columbus.
When I am in Columbus, I dont even feel like I'm in a city that is much more urban than Watson Blvd. or Russell Pkwy in Warner Robins, let alone the major roads in Macon. Of Course, Columbus is bigger, but traveling around roads in Warner Robins, a city of 50-60,000, feels more similar to a road in Columbus than Columbus roads feel compared to cities it has a similar population size to. Thats weird.
What are Columbus busiest roads? Because driving around Manchester Expressway, Veterans, Victory and Macon Rd do not make me feel as if I am in some thriving metropolis compared to being in Macon OR Warner Robins.
Columbus population leads you to believe its more of a city than it really is.
If you feel the atmosphere is "similar" I might could see how you would come to that conclusion, but there's NO WAY at all Columbus comes off as a city that is so much bigger and more vibrant than Macon, not at ALL.

The only thing that makes Macon feel more "city" in I-75.....that's it. The traffic on I-75 is pass-thru traffic....not Macon traffic. Once you get off of the interstate Macon has much less traffic than Columbus. Have you not driven on J.R. Allen PWKY in Columbus or I-185 during rush hour? J.R. Allen PKWY can be a parking lot heading toward downtown in the morning. Macon felt very "country" when I was over there 2 days ago. Zebulon Road has virtually no traffic in my opinion at 5pm. Interstates give Macon a bigger feel. Once you are off that Macon is just a small city of 100,000 people, that's it. Macon's size is decieving because of I-75. For Columbus, don't forget that tens of thousands of people live on post that are not included in Columbus' population. Take a ride down I-185 and see the construction yourself. They are building flyover bridges right now on I-185 just outside Fort Benning as well as widening I-185 for a few miles. This is all in anticipation of 40,000 people moving here in 2-3 years for BRAC.

Man you are in a dream Land, Let me correct you, YOU mean Columbus still has a long way to catch up with Macon, Augusta and Savannah....I bet you can name 5 things that Columbus has that Macon doesn't... all of those business that you name has nothing do with Macon, those closure are effects of the us economy. Macon is not the only city where circuit city and Goody's closes, Atlanta as well, so don't try through that in with stating the true fact..... If the economy had not gotten so bad Macon Would have had 2 circuit cities and Dillard's. You are depending on the Brac project to increase Columbus, well every body know that the govt does not stick to its word and surely by 2012 they will be new changes and revision to BRAC. Macon does not have to have just as much pop or more to surpass Columbus, because it is already surpassing it with less, so just think of what will happen if consolidation passes. Macon serves as a hub over 750,000 in a 30 miles radius. There is not a city with in 60 miles in either direction(N,E,S,W) that can offer Middle GA what Macon can.
The Macon Mall is not going to close no time soon, now on the other hand Columbus Mall does not have anything to worry about because the mall there is already about gone, the piece of one you have.
Tell why if Columbus is doing so well, why does it have a mall for a city with 35-60K pop when its pop is almost 200,000. The Warner Robins and Milledgeville Malls are about the same size as the Columbus Mall. Most city with a 200k pop has 2 fairly good size malls and most are working on a third.... whats up with that.

OK, name 5 things that little ol Macon has that Columbus doesn't.
Your mall is bankrupt and is losing stores left and right. I was just there Monday. The place has fallen tremendously. I was actually concerned for my safety while I was there. I predict it will close or continue to decline more in 2009.
Macon is wayyyyyy oversaturated and will continue to see restaurants and retail stores close.
You need to read up on Columbus. Every facility in Columbus is better, trust me, I have been to everyone in Macon one time or another.
You are the one who needs to get your head out of the clouds and look at things. Macon is improving, but things will get worse there trust me.
Macon will always be Georgia's 4th city. You have Atlanta, then Augusta and Columbus battling it out for #2, then Savannah, and then Macon. There is nothing wrong with that. Macon doesn't have the economic draw that the other 3 cities do. It's a fact and has always been that way. Atlanta (because it's Atlanta), Augusta (because of the strong medical community), Columbus (because of financial companies, insurance companies, and Fort Bennings $3 billion expansion), Savannah (tourism, port), and Macon (not sure of anything really).

Macon will always be #4 in Georgia, everyone knows that. Columbus is in competition (silly as that sounds) with one 2nd tier city and that's Augusta. Macon is not there yet.
Funny you mention Atlantic Southern Bank. I did a lot of business with them, but now they are surviving by the skin of their teeth. Happy new year BTW!
