legal beer and wine sales cut into the local moonshiner's profits.

the county i live in, brooks, only allows the sale of beer. the county seat, quitman, just started allowing the sales of liquor by the drink in restaurants only about two years ago. there was fierce opposition to this by many in the community, but i think its been great for the downtown restaurants. of course, a large percentage of their revenues have to be from food sales. we don't have liquor stores or bars.

moonshine is readily available; $20-$30 for 2 liters (it comes in old coke bottles). we drank a lot of it when i was a teen; its illegal to sell anyway so being 21 doesn't apply.

Aren't people scared to drink that dirty, nasty liquor? Seems like enough of it has killed people over the years. Most of it is produced in unsanitary conditions from what you read. Although I guess its the same mentality that thinks nothing of using meth and all the crap that is used to produce it. Nasty!

I think I'd rather pay a little more and buy my booze from a reputable source!

Maybe "Countryfried" is a moonshiner

who told you it was "dirty, nasty, liquor"?

it's certainly not the same thing as meth.

any bacteria and such that might be in the ingredients is cooked out. if there were any 'dirt' or such in it, you would certainly see it.

moonshine is clear as water.

Yeah, I did think about that, but didn't want to say it and be perceived as one of those "yuppie" "city folk" types trying to stereotype someone.

OK dude - i'll take you word on it.. I wouldn't know

I just don't see why people don't buy corn liquor at their local liquor store if they want it instead of buying it from some peddler. Or stock up in the nearest town that has liquor stores if you live in a dry city or county.

well, i personally am a scotch drinker and keep plenty on hand. i still drink shine though; sometimes you just want it, you know?

the reason its such big business here though is many of the residents of my county do not work or drive, or simply don't want to spend the money to drive into lowndes or thomas county to pick up alcohol. you can phone in an order for moonshine and have it delivered.

there are also illegal bars in the 'projects'; people will buy alcohol from outside and bring it to their homes for resale.

I drink beer that has nothing to do about it. The people of Fannin County voted against it and some local sell out politicians went behind their back. The three who did it were voted out of office and when January comes around they will no longer have the power to destroy Fannin County. We dont need the type of growth that they want. We dont want to become like Canton or Ellijay. Its the people that come up to the Mountains and crowd the roads who wanted to have beer and wine at restuaraunts. They want to leave the city but have everything the cities have. Why not just stay in Floriduh or Atlanta?

So tell us then - are you somehow profiting financially off the past situation of people not being able to buy alcohol in restaurants? As far as more people go, haven't you heard Georgia is one of the fastest growing states in the country? How do you expect to keep newcomers out of "your" county forever? Especially when it is desirable to those same people?

Its not about profit we were fine before people started coming up here on the weekends by the masses and thinking its cute or trendy to rent a cabin. Which is fine but lately they want to change Blue Ridge instead of just enjoy it the way it is and was. The economys bad all over so its not like alcohol not being sold by the drink at establishments is the reason for tough times in Fannin County. The people of Fannin county voted against it and their decision should stand. If ya want to eat and drink at the same time just stay in Atlanta or Florida. No one said ya cant come up here enjoy a drink at the place your renting and cook a nice dinner. Dont fix what aint broken.

You all are probably just the latest place to fall into that category. Didn't Ellijay used to be unknown too - and Dahlonega and Clayton, GA? Now all those places are experiencing an influx of tourists and retirees and second home buyers from Florida, Atlanta and other places. Your probably not being picked on, but its just a sign of the times.
