Mexicans leaving? (Atlanta, Gainesville: salary, quality of life, living in)

To address the OP's question, I don't see large numbers of Mexicans leaving Gainesville. They are still in the schools, esp in the lower elementary levels (I have first-hand experience). Enrollment for Hall County schools is up by about 500 kids. As long as Gainesville is the "chicken capital of the world" we will have Mexican workers. So no, there will be no massive school closings anytime soon!

I'm sure work conditions are terrible in the chicken plants. One was recently cited with a $300,000+ fine by OSHA for "willful" violations.

That said, it doesn't help a town when large numbers of the population are earning minimum wage. That kind of lifestyle leads to crime, dependence on gov't benefits, and gangs. (and we have plenty of gangs ~ a whole laundry list of Mexican gangs are now active in Hall County) We recently had a gang shootout here that left one teenager dead. One of the shooters was an illegal and was in jail on an immigration hold last I heard. He also had a DUI, was driving without a license, and recently dropped out of school. There were also two gang members arrested at the local high school on the first day of school.

What we have in Gainesville is like two different worlds. Some areas are pretty bad. I see gang tags around too, and plenty of poverty (low rent trailer parks for the workers). Yet there are many very upscale areas here. I wonder what in the world all of these people do for income. I guess our medical community is pretty thriving. Official numbers for Gainesville put us at 33% Hispanic. Some estimates for inside the city limits are close to 50%.

I remember the giant ICE raids on the meatpacking plants out west. I wonder what would happen if similar raids took place at our chicken processing plants?

i have been reading this post and honestly not even one of you make sense,in first place who are we to talk about immigrants? if im not mistaken,the only ppl who own this country are native americans(the few left because of white immigration)so i really dont understand the point of this? white pop came from old europe,blacks some from europe others from africa,like asians and hispanics respectively so we are basically immigrants in some way.

I don't think anyone has a problem with legal immigration, but rather the ones that ignore the rules and jump ahead of everyone else.

Exactly. I have a problem with thugs like the illegal teenage gang member who shot out of a car and hit 3 members of a rival gang in Gainesville a few weeks ago. This low life is now in jail with an immigration hold waiting for the feds to pick him up. Any bets that he will cross right back into the US soon after? By the way, his victim died and two other teens are in the hospital with gunshot wounds. This gang member also had a prior DUI, was driving with no license, and his older brother spent time in jail for beating up a rival gang member. Yeah, this is great for our community. NOT.
My kids will NOT grow up surrounded by this filth. We have to leave our own community if we want a "normal" quality of life.
