Red face relocating blindly!

I'm relocating to the Columbus area in the fall. My fiance currently lives in the 31907 zip and isn't too familiar with the rest of Columbus. I am moving with an infant though so I'd like to know which areas to look into as far as apartment rentals, the price range isn't really anything I'm worried about right now but I'd like to know a little more about which areas are more family friendly, and since we will both be working with only one vehicle preferably an area where there are walkable distances to say a grocery store, convenience store, drug store, things like that where if I'm stuck at home without a car and need something like diapers in a pinch I'll be able to do it. Any kind of generalized advice about any particular areas in Columbus where I might want to look into would be helpful. I guess I don't really know what questions to ask, I've only been down there once, I'll be down again in March to try and look at some apartments, but I'm kind of relocating blindly here and anything will help. thanks so much!

oh and yes, this is my first time ever posting something here- i'm a little rusty, bear with me.

I would look at Whisperwood Apartments for a start. I lived there for a while. It is in North Columbus. You should be fine with an infant. I remember there being a good number of people who had kids there. I just remember some people getting obnoxious at pool parties at the front of the complex; that's easy to avoid though. The apartments are within walking distance of an Eckerd drug store, Wendy's, Waffle House, and a gas station. It isn't a long walk, but it is along a divided road with no sidewalk but a wide shoulder. Just something to be aware of. I've made the walk plenty of times. The actual grocery store is down the road the other way, but too far to walk. (I've done it, but that's a long story...)

As far as some general rules go: I remember most of the nicer apartments being located in North Columbus, usually not too far from US 80. I also think that for renting, or if you plan on buying a house goes, stay north of Macon Road and you should be fine. When you start going south and closer to Fort Benning, things can get a little shady.

I spent a couple years in Columbus and had to move blind myself, so hopefully I can help you with anything else.
