This Augusta/Macon fight is silly and is repeated time and time again on any number of threads you can pull up on the Georgia forum. Get over it, both (as well as any other city in GA) are totally dwarfed by Atlanta and in the shadow of many other southern cities.

Still they are nice medium sized southern cities, should grow nicely and I would love to live an any of them besides my current life in Texas. Get a life you guys! List the good stuff going on in your town and get over the who's got the biggest... well, you get the analogy, but it is like a bunch of adolescent boys in a peeing contest with Hercules laughing next door.

Great its seem you and Augusta both have something in common, you have pulled ahead of all the Macon haters drinking up all the haterade.... Save some for Bulldawgfan, he will need it to help wash down all those garlic buttered skrimps.

have anyone heard of a proposed highway to connect Augusta, Macon, & Columbus . if there is it is a brilliant idea. Outside of ATL peole that don't know the state tends to end up heading south into macon sometime going to columbus or augusta travel back to atlanta and connect to the interstate they were suppose to go.

Well there has been a huge road project under construction for years called the fall line freeway connecting Augusta, Columbus and Macon. but its has ran through a lot of obstacles to get complete.

This has been talked about since the mid 1980s... and the result is the Fall Line Freeway... which is still not completed. The name is very misleading though, because it is not a freeway in the sense most of us would think of one. What they did was simply widen existing highways to 4 lanes.. and so the route doesn't follow a straight path, but rather snakes in an awkward configuration, plus you have numerous redlights.. so it really is not much of an improvement over what we had before.

Why are you refering to greenvile and Spartanburg in a Georgia Forum, you are looking for the South Carolina Forum. Greenville and Spartanburg aren't even on the Georgia, South Carolina Border. You should be comparing Greenville to Columbia or Charleston. Not Macon, Augusta, or Columbus.

Sandy Springs Population is still larger then Roswell. Sandy Springs Population is 103,000 and expected to be 106,000 2010. You can't compare Sandy Springs or Roswell to Augusta or Savannah for the simple facts they are Counties that became Cities. So the only "True" Cities larger then Sandy Springs and Roswell are Atlanta and Columbus.

Interesting enough that Metro Atlanta has 4 of 10 of the states largest cities. Augusta and Columbus is estimated at 6,000 apart and ranked as 2nd and 3rd. Savannah, Athens, and Roswell is the only other cities in the state with 100,000. That's interesting.

I think you are VERY confused. Firstly, it wasn't Augusta and Savannah who consolidated with the county. It was Columbus and Augusta. If Savannah's population was the entire county of chatham it would be well over 200,000 and would be listed as the 2nd largest city in GA.

and still, I'd say Macon, Augusta, Savannah, Columbus, Athens and even Albany are more of true "cities" than Sandy Springs and Roswell. Those places are suburban bedroom communities of Atlanta with exploded populations due to atlanta's growth. The cities I mentioned are all the HUB cities of their metropolitan areas.

Great Post. Sandy Springs and Roswell may have more people than Macon but if you ride through all cities, Macon will seem bigger because the other two cities are mainly subdivision cities. Roswell and Sandy Springs may even pass all of the 2nd tier cities in population, but they will never actually feel like a "city" because they're too dependent on Atlanta.

I think the Fall Line Freeway is completed. I-14 is the interstate that will go from Augusta, Macon, Columbus.

To the statement above about large cities. Augusta is not consolidated with the entire county. I don't know why some people continue to think that. Hephzibah/Mcbean and Blythe. Are in richmond county but have their own city limits.
