what's going next to the Home Depot?
I live in Ellijay, and we hear that Blue Ridge is getting a Target!
Now, to defend our neck of the woods...
Everyone who has posted so far has great points, and it's pretty true that north Georgia is a shock to some who have lived in more "civilized" parts of the country. However, I guess it's a little-known fact that Ellijay and Blue Ridge have one of the highest gay populations in the East. So I'd say the natives are pretty tolerant. Anyway, North Georgia is in somewhat of a state of shock, trying to assimilate the housing boom with practical progressive guidelines. Be patient, I agree that it will be over in 5 years.

You hit it on the nail when youre talking about Kentucky folks and what they think of all the North Georia folks moving there..well were their Floridians. They cant stand us and for good reasons. A LOT of locals are going to Kentucky to get away from the Floridians but were doing the same thing to Kentucky as their doing to us. Its a shame really but land always changes hand and the Locals here are like the indians they just havent started scalping anyone yet. Im sorry if I ticked anyone off I just wanted yall to see the attitude that a lot of Floridians encounter when they come here and a lot of times they end up moving back down there. Well gotta run and go get supper at our know over crowded stores.

I'm sorry but you sound so bitter, especially about the "wealthy Floridians coming up here and changing this place for the worst." Hey, it is a free country and "wealthy Floridians" (of course they couldn't possibly be hard working people who have saved and invested wisely so they could move to a beautiful part of the country) could not purchase the land if the natives weren't willing to sell the property. I know a lot of those wicked Floridians who actually love and appreciate the mountains and the beauty and will become active in trying to preserve areas etc. Where I have seen some of the dumping and abuse of land by the locals.

Interesting post. The variation upon perceptions is quite amazing really.

I recon I'm not as dumb as your mayor - no way I'm getting in a pen with a wild boar! Not without a good pig dog, anyway.

I have a couple good pig dogs but there retired now..They live in the North Georgia Mountains and just sit on the porch and gaze at the view and complain about the noisy locals. Hey Prichard what do you think about Rooster fighting???? I see nothing wrong with it and dont see it cruel in anyway. Any one that has ever raised chickens or that is country would say the same.....there chickens man.

Rooster Fighting - I've got no problem with it - I'd probably find it quite entertaining! I see nothing more cruel in letting them fight than eating their women, children and unborn fetuses (eggs). In fact, I've heard of some forigners feeding them steroids to get them big, strong and mean. What's the minimum bet to get you into one of these sporting events at these days where you are?
I've never seen boar up there in Blue Ridge, Lookout Mountain, or anywhere near Clayton. In fact, I've yet to spot one dear anywhere in Rabun Co - seen pleanty of them roaming around Lookout Mountain, just not when I have my gun in my hand. We have pleanty of boar and deer down in Central Florida. Do you still have any boar roaming around in your hills to keep your dogs entertained?

They dont have many anymore beacuse now its a felony to even be at a fight..I can handle a misdemenor but I just dont need a felony on my record. Some still go on but its real hush..hush. Ya know I havent really seen any dear either this year. The growth is pushing them away, probally to Kentucky..lol. Not many Boars in Blue Ridge which is kindoff a good thing because I like my garden and my pumpkins and so would they.Southern Georgias the place to go hog hunting though.

I guess Rooster Fighting is a crime down here but you wouldn't know it - mostly hispanics that get into this. Dog fights, rooster fights, even spider fights - hell, they will fight just about anything if they can. Never been to one myself - don't speak spanish. I always figured that **** Fighting was a spanish thing, not something they do up in the hill country - still, it would be fun to see one.
We got some boar around here; deer too - don't even need to get too far out of the city to see them - especially in the swampy areas. I was surprised at how much deer they have over in NW Georgia compared to Blue Ridge or the Rabun area. Don't quite understand it myself, its still mostly forest land and country in these parts. I sort of expected the place to be crawling with 12 point Bucks - guess I was wrong. Hell, even your Walmart sells 20 times more hunting gear than ours does! There's gotta be some in these woods. I'm probably just too loud and impatiant to wait for your shy deer to show themselves - you know how us Floridians are.

I just got back from visiting the Blue Ridge area -- it is beautiful but appears to me that it's high priced and either is on the brink of a growth explosion OR it's already become and is like a runaway train. I've never seen so much property for sale, so many agents, etc. I want to know why someone would live in GA vs. TN or NC -- what about taxes, cost of living, etc.?
