I am orginally from GA, moved to Bradenton Fl for several years, and now I'm back in GA for a while. I researched every city in FL, but I had two children to think about. I also worked in real estate in FL. Like any town you have your good and bad. We enjoyed Bradenton because of its close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, Sarasota, and 30 miles from Tampa. The home prices there are at an all time low, but beware of which side of town you move to, like I stated this town has it's good and bad.

Sarasota is also a beautiful town to live in, yet it is a bit more pricey to purchase a home there. Anything you can think of is at your fingertips in Bradenton/Tampa and Sarasota. Night life, shopping, beaches, and great schools.

There is a community 40 miles south of Bradenton, North Port. The house prices are attractive right now. The town of North Port is nice, although the closes beach is Ellenton, and it's not one of the most attractive beaches IMO. Plus the crime rate there is high and not many communities in North Port are deed restricted so you can have a beautiful home, pay thousands for landscaping and your neighbor could have cars and boats up on cinder blocks in the driveway. There are a few communties in North Port that are deed restricted, but you will pay the price, sometimes as much as Sarasota, and you will not have a beach close by.

Another "southern" community that is close to the Gulf of Mexico is Parrish. It is a small town 10 miles north of Bradenton. It is about 15 miles from the beach and has two red lights and a country vibe to it. I do believe the home prices there are attractive as well.

Fl is very nice, and layed back. You just have to know where to look. If I be of any help to you, you are more than welcome to PM me Or ask away in this thread.

I think the OP is asking about retiring to GA not FL.

We are from South Florida and moved to Wodostock. We are not ready for retirement yet but are empty nesters. It depends on what you are looking for and the amount of $ you want to spend. Are you looking for some land or an established subdivision. Do you want ammenties? Do you golf? Want to be near the city? You get the idea....

I am presently living in Tallahasse, Florida--Moved here from Milledgeville, Ga.
I hate it here, beach too far away, no river except for a long distance also.
The houses in Florida, in the area we like, are all old (built 1970 or later)and much more expenseville than my beautiful home in Milledgeville.
I loved Ga., beautiful lakes, islands on Lake Sinclair to cook out or just relax. Enjoyed loving there a lot.
I'm sure there are better places in Florida but their property taxes on homes are outrageous from what I understand, no matter what part it is.
Good Luck fining a Great Place to Retire.
