Default College Student

Hello, I am currently a college student majoring in education. I am from Ohio but want to avoid teaching here as the school funding situation in most districts is really volatile. I am very interested in teaching in Georgia since I have seen that the average starting wages for a high school teacher is about 34,000+ as compared with the high 20's and low 30's of North Carolina and Florida. I was just wondering what are some good areas of the state for someone in that economic range and what areas are in need of teachers. I have looked at the Gwinnett and Cherokee school districts and am very impressed. I'm from a very rural area in Ohio so I don't need to be near a large city, although that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing either. Sorry to ramble on, any information would be greatly appreciated as I would like to narrow down where I see myself after graduation next year. Thanks.

Bobcat, since you don't have much experience in a metro area, try moving to smaller suburban areas than Cobb, Cherokee, or Gwinnett. Possibly Houston County schools near Warner Robins or Columbia County near Augusta. Also, you might really enjoy the rural areas of Georgia (same pay with much lower living expenses) such as Laurens, Lowndes, Tift, Monroe, Sumter, Carroll, or Troup Counties.

Consider teaching in the Athens area.. as a college student.. I think you would like the atmosphere.. Neighboring Oconee county has a very good school system. YOu are also only an hours drive from Atlanta but the cost of living is considerably less.
As far as money.. I think Gwinnett pays the most.. with Cobb and Cherokee not far behind... but remember the cost of living is more expensive... homes are not that cheap.
I would not fool with Columbia County.. I have good friends who taught in the school system there who got very frustrated with the good-ole-boy process that dictates hiring and advancement for teachers. It is a system rife with nepotism.. Stick with a district in metro Atlanta or Athens.
