Default Small town locations

I'm living in the state where I grew up and it is turning into a place I'm thinking of leaving. I'm on my own with a small budget and female so I need to be somewhere with low crime rates. I'd love to live in a small(ish) town, the kind that has a town square. Corny, I know. Most of the likely places I find in Georgia are really close to Atlanta and I need to be somewhere a bit more southerly. Has anyone seen or maybe even live in a place like this?

Newnan would be my first vote. Others possibly: Thomaston, Barnesdale, Warm Springs, La Grange. Or did you mean further south than that?

Thomaston, Zebulon, Newnan would fit the bill nicely. Stay away from Griffin & Barnesville. Lagrange could be another possibility.

I was coming on to suggest Newnan...looks like I was beat to it in spades.
I think that it is one of GA's most charming towns.

I agree as well.....Newnan/Peachtree City area is the place to be!!
Do yourself a favor and stay clear of Columbus as they are going to have MAJOR issues with BRAC and unemployment is much worse than reported.

Thank you all for your quick and informative replies! I had a look at Newnan and you're right -- it's just what I have in mind. If only it could be moved further south. I really do want to stay away from Atlanta. Also, anyone who knows me will tell you I turn blue if the temps dip below 50 degrees. Is there anywhere you can suggest that would be like Newnan but down towards Americus or Macon way? Again, thanks for your help.
