Small Town Georgia
Hello, I plan to move to Georgia to be near my family there. Or rather in the same state.
I am looking for a nice small town with a southerly feel. Nice wide open space, quiet, and an all around nice area. Preferably in southern Georgia.
I would prefer to live in an area that is diverse racially. ( I am a Black female) I just don't want to feel out of place or deal with racists.
I am moving there for college, just to get out of the state that I am currently residing.
If you have any information on such a town please let me know.
Thanks in advance. =)

Have you considered Valdosta? Very 'southern', but surprisingly progressive due in part to the presence of Valdosta State University.

Racism in Georgia
Do you really believe that racism is worse in Georgia than in other places in the U.S.? The south is not anymore racist than anywhere else my dear. This is 2009. Times are a changing! We don't think like we used to, why we don't even marry our cousins anymore. We don't even ride mules to town since we got that car last year.

Let's be real folks. Whites worry about moving where there are "too many" blacks. Black folks have similar issues and worries. It is sad but still true. I hear the term "racist and racism" used more than ever these days. It does get old, but it demonstrates there is still a lot of mistrust. Moving on....
With that bit, I concur with Valdosta. Tifton also has a college as does Douglas.
Then there are the gnats, fire ants, mosquitos, etc.
Good luck.

Valdosta would be a good fit.
VSU is not a liberal, what I guess you're calling "progressive", university, nor is Valdosta a liberal town.

Well, compared to Berkeley or Cambridge I suppose not. Still, I think a young black female would feel comfortable there.

I absolutely agree she would be comfortable.
I didn't want her to get the wrong impression though that this is a liberal town. It is very far from it.

Liberal/Georgia small town. A good entry to the oxymoron list.

If I understand it right, you are all saying that Valdosta is a nice small town, with a 'narrow' perception of the world....where there is still racism with a 'soft touch'....every one lives segragated? Or, did I miss the point?
If I did not, it seems that as beautiful as they are and can be to live, small towns limit the individual if he/she does not travel to widen the mind...why are people still in the 21 century so caught up on color of skin....specially when we know so much about science....and DNA....aren't we ALL a mix anyways.....or mutations thereoff....we should spend a little bit of time watching national geographic to learn who the real primordial races really were........
oh, this is another interesting perspective, in the the last two centuries if your skin was white, it meant that you had leasure/time and 'slaves' did all the work for you, planting, etc...black or white...depending where you lived. The workers had the tan. Now, with technology and machines, the rich have the time and tan, and the busy bees working in computers, etc., all day long, have the 'paler' complexion.....regardless of race..
