Farm land in GA????......
Hello Everyone,
My wife and I are planning to move to GA from Connecticut. I would love to have a chicken farm!! That's my life long dream. I am experienced but I have never had my own farm. We have 2 children. We want good schools and great neighbors. My wife will be working so she will have to commute. We love the quiet country life!! Please give us some advice...We are planning to visit in the summer....

some counties no longer allow chicken farms, or only allow in them in specific areas, as a result of the awful smell they produce.
before deciding to purchase any land, make sure you know for a fact they will give you a permit to build a chicken farm.

Do your children go to good schools now? GA is at or near the bottom in education (based on SAT scores) pretty darn consistently. It is important to note that Connecticut is pretty consistently in the top 20 if not higher.
Have you ever lived in the South before? It is very different than the NE. Unless you are a southerner relocating home, you need to proceed with great caution. Also, outside of metro areas, it can be very hard to be the outsider. In the "country" things really are different.

i've said it before and i'll say it again; the poor test scores aren't the fault of our schools; it is the fault of our students. while this may not sound like the appropriate thing to say, it would be easier to understand if you attended a rural georgia school. those who are willing to put forth an effort receive an excellent education.
rural georgia is like anywhere else; if you make an effort to belong, you will. people won't come beating on your door when you move in anxious to involve you in everything. if you decide to though, you'll be gladly welcomed.
you are right in that its different than the northeast; our customs and mannerisms are like any of those in the south. its certainly not for everyone, but i'm told acclimation comes quickly and easily.

You have experience on chicken farms? So do I and in South GA. Good luck! People I know who are in the chicken business are miserable. They are constantly screwed by the big corporations and their profit margins are absurdly small if any.
If it were me, I would go into the organic, free range egg business. Smaller operation, but more satisfying and less intensive than dealing with tens of thousands of chickens with the environmental issues. And, under the Obama administration, you are going to get a LOT more environmental issues.
GA ain't easy in the summer on livestock. We are still in drought in North GA. We have awful humidity. We have fire ants which is rough on livestock. We have gnats in South GA which can drive a priest nuts. We have crime. We have ethnic tensions. We have tornadoes. We have a State Assembly that is nuts. We have a governor who cannot make up his mind whether he is a democrat or republican or a helicopter pilot or a farmer or whatever. We have a 159 counties each run a different way by "interesting" people. You cannot buy beer on a Sunday but you can buy pornography. If you want to fly someplace, you will have to go to Atlanta. Plan on 3 days for that and not during rush hour. Georgia is not the promised land some seem to think it is. It has people. And you must know what that means.

I have to respond to the above post. Georgia is a good state to live in and a lot of people love living here. Come down for a visit and talk to people. Check out Toccoa, Georgia, and the surrounding areas.

Gainesville is a processing and factory breeding area, not a farm by far..
As far as land goes, barrow county should have it cheap enough and close enough to the metro. Not sure about their rules on various stock however

I didn't want to be the party-pooper, but since you've opened the door, i'll agree that everything you said was correct.
I wouldn't dare attempt a chicken farming operation.
