It seems every city forum has these characters.. the ones that think their city is growing at this exploding pace as though it were Shanghai.. (during one of the worst economic recessions since the Great Depression)
Maybe its just wishful thinking or grandious delusions, but when you look at the real numbers.. you will see usually very modest growth in the single digits or none at all.. sort of a status quo. I know the Augusta forum has these same sort of characters. I have to laugh at times.. at least they are proud of Augusta. I am too, but some of the outlandish claims made are a bit hilarious. I have lived in Augusta long enough to know it will never be a major city. It is not ever going to be like Charlotte or Atlanta. We can opnly hope that perhaps we may catch up to Columbia or Greenville or Chattanooga.. and I think that may be a possibilty some day. As long as we get progressive leadership (finally we have forward thinking officials) things should get better after this recession and things should really ramp up. But I'm content with just having a decent medium sized metro area with most of the conveniences I need, and good neighborhoods to raise a family. I can always drive 2 hours to Atlanta for the big city stuff.

I am not allowed my own opinion, huh? By order of NewtownMacon. From here on out, if I want an opinion I will just ask you for it, OK?

I have given you every opportunity to showcase your city. You compared it to the very worse in the southeastern United States and failed miserably. And yet I am still not allowed my own, differing opinion. You crack me up. Are you like in the sixth grade or something? Does your mommy know you are posting on the internets at 11:00 in the evening?

An explanation. By a wreck, I mean Macon has had the potential to become something other than it is. It is the only large metro area around. A hub city, if you will. Right in the middle of a large state. In other words... nearly a perfect location for growth... either industrial, commercial and/or residential. And yet, when I visit, what I see is a run down, older downtown area with a major movement away from the 'inner' city. Little urban renewal, boarded up buildings in the main downtown area, many empty buildings and parking lots out on Eisenhower, Pio Nono still has destroyed buildings from the storms a year or two ago. I see published data that shows a very low average household income. I do not see a lot of industry moving there and/or expanding. What I do see is stores closing down in one area and opening up in another... which is lateral growth... not growth (in the general sense). I see a rather large amount of crime taking place for a city of around 100,000 people.
I see these things with my own eyes. I have not made up a single thing. That is not bashing. That is reality. There are some nice things. Bass Pro Shop is nice. Harbor Freight Tools is pretty cool. The Cherry blossoms paint the town colorful for a brief week or two. North Macon has some nice neighborhoods. But as a whole... a wreck I say. Which, needless to say, is my opinion.

lilmusket,

Very well put. I think we all are collectively holding our breaths during these economic times. Even those of us who live out in the sticks, such as I. Which brings up another point... the very thing (growth) everyone in the second tier cities are asking for is the reason I have fled to the sticks. Individually, we people are A-OK. But as a whole, in a large group, we tend to suck. Typically (not always, mind you), the larger the school system the less education gets done. The larger the city (again, typically), the higher the crime rate. We may be social creatures... but, in my opinion, we suck at it. I have done the large cities for most of my life. I now have the ability to chose. That being said... I chose the rural life for me and mine.

^I'll name more....Tallahassee, Asheville, Athens, Chattanooga, Huntsville, Lakeland, etc.

There are a LOT of places that have less going for them location-wise than Macon, yet they still have thriving downtowns.

Well, I guess you showed me. All that growth and development in Macon.

And yet 33% of your residents live below the poverty line. I take it back what I said about Macon. There is no hope for it to be anything but what it is. That downtown has been renovated? Good God it reminds me of driving through Homestead, Florida after Hurricane Andrew went through. Except they rebuilt Homestead.

Oh, it did. I now think there is absolutely no hope for Macon. All that growth and development and the average household income is still more than $20,000 per year less than the state average. It is now crystal clear that Macon has no chance for change.
Thanx, NewtownMacon. You have enlightened me. That place just doesn't suck... it really sucks.

It a waste of time with you, because you have proven yourself along with others to be a true Macon hater/basher....When Macon does something whether its good or bad you in turn make out the good to be bad and the bad to be worse.....So from this point, i refused to waste my time with stup O's like you. Because anybody with common sense Knows that Macon average income level is much higher than $20,000 a year, it you do i feel very sorry for what ever company or business you attempt to run; and common knowledge would tell any experienced developers NOT attempt to invest in an area with a large percentage of pop is below average income level that its no chance of supporting these developments. I would at least think they would have that much sense even, YOU!!!!

That is $20,000 less than the state average, RundownMacon. Get it straight. You feel sorry for me? Seriously? Man o man, dude... you got issues. The least of which is living where you live.

By the way... the average household income in Macon is $26,000... so even though you quoted me incorrectly (but again), you were not that far off. And it does not take any common sense to look that up.... you should try it some time. (Since you obviously have an abundance of common sense.)

That is like... uh... strike 15 for you. Are you ever gonna step away from the plate? Its beyond sad now.
