To Albany Native: I'm from Moultrie and was wandering how to go about checking possible open positions at MCLB. Do you know what the hiring process is?

Yes! The hiring process is as follows"1. NEPOTISM2. KNOW someone3. Be in a HUNTING CLUB OR FISHING CLUB4. Be part of the GOOD OLE BOY network system5. Forget about what you know and your true MERIT, cause the aforementioned null and voids ALL.6. Repeat steps 1-6

The figures you quote are for the "town" of Albany. The outer areas are not so bad. If I was a young man and had a chance to get a good job at the Marine Base I would take it. Live South of Albany, it's an easy drive to Camilla or East to Sylvester, or North to the Lake Blackshear area.
You don't need to live in Albany to work in Albany.

I agree and would like to add that you don't have to live in another town. There is Dougherty County of which Albany is only a part. I live in a rural area near the airport. Crime is almost non existent. Putney is also a great little community.

Hey cleanit,
I strongly agree with you! Perhaps Albany is so blind that most residents either can't handle the truth or simply pacify themselves and turn the other cheek. MCLB really runs amuck with RACE DISCRIMINATION to include a conglomerate of unlawful acts at the expense of those who have the fortitude to oppose the aforementioned! Please keep in mind, MCLB is a Family Run Business, infested with NEPOTISM and the GOOD OL' BOY SYSTEM and not a 100 % Government RUN Agency! Hmmmmm... ponder... I believe the IQ level averages approximately 72? Oh yeah, if you're from the NORTH, watch out! Yankee Be Ware... Plantation mentality etc...
Albany does have a lot to offer though... country settings, fishing, hunting, land, little traffic, high crime rate, high divorce rate, murder capital, lack of jobs, high jobless rate, poor public schools, racism, dirty roads, trashy run down looking city blocks and neighborhoods and red clay. Well there's always hope and prayers! What keeps me here? I too believe in both.

I am a white person living working at Albany State University and I live in Leesburg. I have never had any problems with Blacks or Whites, never been the victim of crime, and never had any problem with people of color having an attitude toward me. I treat people respectfully and consistently find that I get that treatment right back. I like the area, the weather, the availability of major stores (e.g., Kohls, J C Pennys, Sears, Walmart, Michaels, etc.) and restaurants, the very low cost of living, and its proximity to the major attractions to be found in Georgia and Florida. I've lived many places much, much worse and appreciate what southwest Georgia has to offer.

I moved to the Albany area over three years ago but chose to buy a house in Lee County. My understanding is that the Dougherty Co. School system (Albany) has some really good elementary schools but I don't know that you would want your kids to attend one of the middle schools or high schools. Those who buy a house in Dougherty Co. tend to send their children to private school. Many people are critical of the lack of restaurants and decent shopping but it really isn't that bad. There are enough choices to get by and if you really need something more, as was pointed out, Tallahassee is close by as is Columbus, GA (less than 90 mins away and an easy drive) so there are other options. Although the crime rate in Albany (especially around the downtown area) is high and the work ethic in that area not the strongest, Lee County is a decent place to live. The crime rate is pretty low in Lee County, the houses are reasonably affordable, the traffic not bad at all and the schools are good.
