But I agree with the last few comments. The river in Macon seems to just be in the way. You know... the need for bridges and all. I have seen a couple of joggers down there... but nothing like in Augusta and Columbus. Those cities 'celebrate' their respective rivers. I saw this river event in Columbus one time and was impressed with the turnout. And as for Augusta... don't they race boats on their river? I have heard it is a great event to attend. I cannot think of a single event that happens on the Ocmulgee in Macon. Well, except when they find a body floating in it.....

I'm just seeking opinions of people who live there already or have been in the area.

I didn't read the first 80 messages on this thread, so forgive me if this is a reapeat. I love Macon, but I will say that the river is totally under utilized in Macon. Other cities would kill for a river through downtown and Macon has a railroad on one side and I-16 on the other. Now, the ocmulgee heritage trail has been built and it is awesome. I jog it all the time and it is very crowded when the weather is nice. That being said, both Columbus and Augusta have a better use of their rivers. Macon should look to them for ideas. Riverside Drive has some river-side property and Macon should really focus on improving that area. Just my 2 cents. It is not too late to take advantage of the river....

To the poster from Boston, you will find the cost of living MUCH less with a nice 3BR house renting for 1000+ and you could purchase a 2000sf 3br home in a good place for around 125000 and up. Coming from an urban area, you will understand the crime. In Macon, just like any urban area, if it is cheap, your in a high crime area, if it is more expensive, you are in a lower crime area. In the hood, crime is horrible, in nice areas, crime is not seen. I live in the city limits about 1.5 miles from downtown and I have seen zero crime beyond littering(and that is primarily due to the trashy folks from the country who use my neighborhood as a cut-through) so safe areas are plentiful. Just drive around: trash and graffitti, keep driving. As for schools, many elementary schools in Macon are great such as Alexander II, Springdale, Sonny Carter, etc. Middle Schools are, well, not so great. Howard Middle and Rutland Middle will suffice, but still aren't winning any awards. The other middle schools are absolutely, positively unacceptable under any circumstances. As much as I love Macon and want to recommend it to new residents....the middle schools are a definite weak point. I am very familiar with the schools in Bibb County and if you want more info...IM me
