Default Gibson Area

Hey all,
Just retired firefighter here looking at property in the Gibson area. We are from Fl. and will be relocating very soon. I am looking for some imput on the Gibson area. We are mid-40's, have 2 boys (home schooled), not partiers at all, love the easy-going, country lifestyle. We have equine and live stock, and want a relaxing place. So, I will ask the usual question: Can anybody help us out? Seriously, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Have you visited yet? What kind of information do you need?

I don't know about Gibson, but Georgiadog probably does. He's located in Thomson (McDuffie county) which is about 20-25 miles north of Gibson.

Georgiadog,
Thanks for helping. As my post stated, we are laid back, easy going folks. I am 'retired' after 25 years in fire service. We presently live in south Brevard county in Fl. We are paying 3k in property taxes and 4k for insurance, and we are 10 miles from the beach (which we are not beach people). We are looking for an area that is "easy going", friendly folks, low crime (naturally). We will be purchasing at least 7 acres as we have equine and some livestock. We want to build a smaller, modest home, barn, etc.
We are going to visit the area in about 2 weeks, just to get a couple days view of the area.
What we are wondering are the basics: where do you buy groceries in your area? Farm vets in the area? Parks, horse trails? We are not night-life people but do enjoy eating out, so how about restaurants (mom and pop places are great with us). Is there an area that you wouldn't recommend seeing as what we are looking for? Dr.s, dentist, hospitals?
Sounds like a lot, but any help you could extend would be greatly appreciated.

mike

Dont know anything about Gibson but some other towns you may be interested in getting information on are:

Tyrone/Brooks - a little on the expensive side but has the best of both worlds country and city, real estate here starts around 150K for 5 acres but is the minimum lot size for all county residents. Virtually no crime and some of the best schools in the state for the last 30 years running.

Hawkinsville - Very country, great people, mostly locally owned and operated resturants, current real estate is cheap but is quickly rising, mostly an equine or agricultural community, about an hour away from any mid to large city entertainment. Virtually no crime, good schools but small town so it isn't as well funded as I think a school system should be.

Forsyth - A growing older communtiy and has just recently been discovered as a equine and fly-in community, if you get into one of the equine subdivisions you will pay around 750K for a home but outside of the planned community prices are much more reasonable. I recently purchased an A frame log home (2/2) on 37 acres here for 358K, it also came with two small ponds, a large year round running creek, 8 stall barn, and a welding shop that I really have no use for, not knowing how to put it to use. Virtually no crime but is close to Macon (20 min) cose to ATL (30 min) which both have crime. Schools have not been that great in the past, but alot of wealthy people are moving here and the schools are getting the money they deserve and it is showing in kids test results.

GA has lots of other good equine communities, research as many as possible before making a decision. These just happen to be my top 3 choices.

Default Gibson Info.

Hello, I would love to tell you about Gibson area we just purchased 11 acres in Gibson we love the area we haven't made the move yet from fl. but we did lock in on the land while it is affordable. Gibson is quiet just the way we like it and lots of hills very pretty. we go up and vacation there we drive around area to learn about area so far we found that Gibson reminds us of Mayberry on the Andy Griffith show. they have a nice little store for groceries with a butcher people seemed friendly there. gas station, car wash. of course they have court house, police station (small) we found Hamburg State Park not to far of a ride from Gibson. People fish and picnic their. We did not see any restaurants in town we went to next town called Warrenton they have a nice restaurant called Miss Janes on Main Street food was great southern cooking very friendly people also.Warrenton is only about 15 min. from Gibson They have more stores such as Hardware,Dollar General,Gurley's super market a few other small restaurants that we have not tried yet.antique stores also Dr. office /clinic in warrenton. Thomson is the next larger town after Warrenton they have everything needed shopping, restaurants, hotels,Hospitals etc. and it is only about 30 mins.from gibson not to bad and it is a nice ride. We picked up a phone book at Miss Janes they give them away there it is very helpful to be able to see what the local towns offer they cover Gibson,Wrens,Harlem,Thomson,Warrenton. Hope this Info. Helps I'm learning about area little by little but so far I like what I see.We used Brashear Realty they have listings of area on Georgia country.com
