what is the NW corner of GA like?
Hi,
We are looking at moving to GA, wondering about the Rome area and points north. Will we find single-family homes with a couple of acres for under 200,000? How about zoning- can we run a small business from our home? How are the schools in this area?
If there are posts covering this info, please direct us to them. Thanks!

Moving to Northwestern Georgia!!
Hi,
Well we have been living in Canton (Cherokee County) for over 5 years now and we love it. Close to lake Allatoona, the North Georgia Mountains and shops. Our son plays tennis up in Rome and is only an hour and 10 minute drive away.
The schools are great around Canton, but not to sure about Rome! Finding homes on a 1 to 2 acres under 200k is going to be tough. It also depends if you are looking for a newer home or older home!

There are some beautiful areas in the Trenton / Look Out Mountain areas. It's not that easy to get there from Atlanta due to the topography. Real easy to get there from Chatanooga, though. The NW corner tried to capitalize on the boom that had taken place in the middle and eastern N. Georgia Mountain regions, but it stalled out and lost steam. Yes, you can find some lots with great views for less than you can in Blue Ridge or in the NE corner.
The problem with living in Georgia and working in Chatanooga is that no one in their right mind would do this! Why pay GA state income tax when you work in Tenn, where they have no state income tax? And, other than Chatanooga, there isn't much going on in the NW corner (further north than Rome). So, it's kind of an odd area - not part of Atlanta; not a bedroom community to Chatanooga. A number of Mexican illegals have made a home up there also.

Trenton is NOT a place for outsiders to relocate trust me. You will not ever be accepted no matter how hard you try and fit in.
The Illeagal Mexicans will find that out sooner or later as well.

We are not that concerned about being accepted, but I am curious why you say this. What kind of people ARE accepted?
My husband sells and services automotive repair equipment- has his own business. Much of it is done through the internet (nationwide), so that's why we don't necessarily need to be "accepted."
We live in MI, and the winters seem to get longer every year- hence the interest in GA.

Guess that Braves_fan is speaking to just about any smallish town... where if you are not a kin of someone who has lived there since the turn of the century, the 1800-1900 version, then you will have a potentially difficult time fitting in.
I guess I was lucky, as didn't really experience that, but I only worked in Trenton, and lived ~15 minutes away on Sand Mtn, in Alabama.
As you have interest in using the web, big advice would be to make sure that you have a very solid understanding and then agreement w/ the local i'net provider - from my recollection, there was quite many unhappy people w/ the service in Trenton proper. My service on the hill was via different provider, and I had excellent service and speed both, for a quite decent rate.
LOL,, speaking of winters and this area,,, as I too am from a climate where snow and the such is quite common, I died laughing every winter there - weatherman would just even mention the word of potential for snow flurries, and there would be a mad rush on basics at the local markets...
Oh, couple last things... many in the area take quite a bit of pride regarding the War Of Northern Aggression. Secondly, Trenton is actually in The State Of Dade.

That's a good point- we would need reliable internet service, or making a living might be tricky.
We are living in a rural area of MI now, and have experienced the tendency for communities with families who've lived there for multiple generations to be closed to outsiders and "out-of-box" thinking. It's a fascinating thing to observe.

North Georgia
Northwest Georgia is a beautiful place to live. Besides Trenton, which someone mentioned, there is Chickamauga (great if you like history) - no city taxes there, Trion, Summerville, Fort Oglethrope, Rome. Lovely little towns, all of them.
Govgeous mountain scenery.
Mild weather - never too hot, mild winters.
Yes, at the first snowflake, everyone scurries because we are not equipped to handle ANY accumulation of snow. You won't find snow shovels, snow plows, snow tires, etc. down here. You might experience a light snow once every few years.
Chattanooga, TN and Atlanta, GA are the big cities and neither are far away.
You can reach the beach in about 5 hours.
Don't worry about being accepted. Most of us are accustomed to folks from other areas of the country by now. Just keep in mind that we are mostly laid back. We teach our children to say "yes sir and no mam, please and thank you" and they will probably call you Mr John or Miss Ellie instead of Mr or Mrs Smith. We are just not used to abruptness, if you will keep that in mind please.
MI is a beautiful state. We visited there quite often while our son was in college and found everyone to be friendly. (Oh yes, we will probably talk to you in line in the grocery store.) We did that in MI and after a small pause, found that most people happily chatted with us.
If you decide to come to Georgia, we welcome you!
(And please don't turn up your nose at sweet tea or grits until you try them.)

wildwood area?
Can anybody tell me about the wildwood area? We are relocating soon and have narrowed it down to Chattanooga (IF we can relocate our already GA based business), chickamauga, or any of Dade county (including Wildwood).
I haven't seen much about these GA areas (of course I am new to this ) and would appreciate any and all information I can get. We want to rent an apartment/house. Preferably about 600 per month - would love to pay more and may have to BUT 3 kids in college! We have no kids at home (we are both 40) and I want close access to Chattanooga if I am unable to move there. Oh, a view is very important! (Don't want much, do I??)
I just figure if we are going to move (from Albany/Agony Ga-LOL) I want to see SOME MOUNTAIN STUFF!! LOL
I wonder how hard it would be to find a great apartment complex in a smaller area - pool etc..with a view. (Trees, mtns, some type of water that isn't in my bathtub-Hee Hee)
Please help?
