The economic downturn has forced us to consider moving from NY. Does anyone have any prospective area in Georgia that are progressive, affordable with a good school system?

I would suggest Columbus, Georgia. It is a very progressive city with excellent school systems, and with BRAC expansions thousands of job opportunites will be opening up in all different asepcts of service to accomidate the thousands of new soldiers being relocated there. Some people claim housing prices in Columbus are way overpriced, but they aren't that bad. If Columbus doesn't suit you theres Phenix City Alabama which has an excellent city school system and has almost the same services as Columbus, and its just across the river.

Here are some websites you can check out about Columbus and Phenix City

Georgia is a very conservative state. I would not think some one with liberal views from New York would want to move to Ga. In GA when yankees move here, they are then called "D***ed Yankees"...

Honestly, no.

Being from NY would probably be held against you worse than being a blended multi-racial family, in my opinion. You would definitely want to spend some time in an area (a week or two) before making the move down here, but beware--people in GA are sometimes really nice to visitors, but will not be if you actually become a resident.

Also, living in GA is sometimes not as cheap as folks in more northern states think---housing prices in the midwest are cheaper in many cases.

Being from the south but I visit New York State a lot and just remember NYC is really in Jersey. The Majority of New York state is very conservative and laid back.

And what makes you think that GA is doing any better in the economic downturn? Have you looked at the unemployment rate reports lately?

Ouch. Harsh comments above. Actually, Western New York has more of a midwestern accent. Anyway, try Savannah. We're probably the most cosmopolitan mid sized city in Georgia and we're very welcoming to people from anywhere, whether from New York or not.
True, we haven't gone through the economic downturn unscathed, but we've got one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state right now. Its still up there, but lower compared to other places in GA.

Do your homework & come for a visit. Wherever you decide to bury your roots. Georgia is a great state!
