Are there any loft style apartments in the city? That has always been something of interest to me.

I recently visited Athens to look at their apartments. For me it was one stop shopping, I signed a lease immediately. The Exchange at Athens is exactly like the pictures they show on the website. The walk in closet is huge! You mentioned a pool...they have several! Honestly, it is a beautiful community.
The look of the apartments are really modern and sleek. I chose to rent the 2 bedroom apartment which is a little cheaper than the 1 bedroom. The amenities were endless and beautiful. The apartment complex is situated on a hill which is really nice. It is about 10 minutes or so away from downtown but the area was really nice. It had a shopping center right across the street which is convenient. I am moving from to Athens in Aug. from Tampa Fl so it will be a nice change of scenery for me.
I would definitely recommend that you look in to the Exchange at Athens. This is the one apartment community that I have looked at that looks exactly like the pictures on the website. Good Luck!

Oh I had another question - what specifically is the "downtown" area? Where are the good stores/restaurants at?

I was only in Athens overnight to look at UGA and find a place to live so the only "downtown area" I caught a glimpse of was around UGA. Not sure what exactly was there but it looked nice. I didn't have much time to look around...so when you find out what's good in "downtown" Athens let me know so I can put that on my "things to do and see list" when I move!

I saw Exchange at Athens on Rent.com, and it was just amazing! My boyfriend and I are looking at it like, is this a resort or an apartment?? I said, well any idiot can take a great picture of a property and throw it online. That is nice to hear that the real life version is just as good.

No.. just the University busses... but they can get you from downtown to 5 points neighborhood and down Milledge avenue to Broad and back downtown. If you live in one of those areas, they can be very handy (but they only run when school is in session) but they are a nice complement to the city bus system. The city transit system is fairly reliable and inexpensive to use. It is possible to live in Athens without a car, but having a car would make things easier.. especially if you need to go out to the mall or go to the big box stores. many students live in Athens without a car and it doesn't seem to be a problem for them. Athens is a bike friendly city too.
yes there are lofts in downtown.. not sure what the availability is but I am sure you could find something.

Downtown Athens is directly across from the old campus portion of UGA. If you can get to the UGA arch, then you are downtown. Downtown athens is a failry compact area.. rectangular in shape, basic grid street pattern. the streets the bound downtown are Broad Street, Thomas St, Pulaski St and Dougherty street. It's an easy area to walk around and explore. Some cool bars, bookstores and restaurants.. and retail shops.

If you are a UGA student or employee, the city busses are free, you have to show your Student or employee ID.
Downtown is right where UGA is and there are several good restaurants. Not sure what kind of food you enjoy, though

by the way Pearl..I wouldn't consider Athens a "city" it's more like a small town, but not too small
