Living in Winder, Georgia
We moved to Winder in 2005 after living in Jacksonville, Florida (which sucked) and living in Cumming for over 25 years. Forsyth County had become too urbanized, so we found Barrow County quiet and relaxing. Sure the town of Winder is a sleepy little Southern town, but if you want to get your tail shot, pay extrordinary taxes, hunt for someone who speaks English then go live in Gwinnett or one of the other Metro-gang counties. I have found the people in Winder to be very kind and to have excellent principals. They are good down home folks in the traditional sense. Sure the county government and city have their faults, but who doesn't. If you want things fixed you have to participate.
If you want a quiet place to live where there are more cows and pastures than gangs and problems, move to Winder.

Yeah, I moved out here in 98 and hated it, moved back to Gwinnett for about a year, and couldn't wait to move back to Winder.
It really is nice living out here, if you want sports UGA is 15mins. away, shopping and restaurants Hamilton Mill, and Mall of Ga. are about 20mins., Boating, Lake Lanier 30mins. away, and my favorite Helen, and the surounding Ga. Mountains about an hour.
I know all my neighbors, and even leave the windows open at nite.

So I go to Home Depot, ta buy 2 screen doors today, I'm struggling to install them by myself. 2 of my neighbors are outside grilling, the next thing I know, there's 5 dudes helping me install my new doors.
I don't live in a rich neighborhood, the avg. house is 130K, but we help eachother when we can!

I'm coming down next week from Seattle to look for a new place. I'm focusing in on Winder as I will be attending UG. Looking in the home value range of 130K, friendly neighborhood, and good local BBQ nearby. As I said I'm from Seattle and then to think a little "left" and love the mix of cultures. Any suggestions?

Pack your bible.
Or "Babble" as we call them.
You're not going to find Winder to be left leaning or have any diversity.
Small towns in the south are the polar opposite end of the political spectrum to say... San Francisco.

I agree with this. Winder is pretty enough, and kind of cute, but I doubt you'll dig it. We're considering many places in several states, and that whole area is not on our list. Athens would be if it were closer to the beach. I really think you should try to be right in Athens, I think it will be much more your speed and more convenient too. Have you visited any of the places out here yet?
