Thanks to all for you great info.
My thinking about Athens is it would be a mid sized interesting town alternative to somewhere in Florida. I'm looking for a mild to warm late-fall/winter/spring locale. I like the winter climate better in FL than GA, but I find a lot of Florida to be cookie cutter, strip centers, crowded, and lacking the character and history I like. I also don't like that fact that you can't drive to the Mountains in FL. I'm also a Widespread Panic fan and thought that was cool they came out of the Athens scene!
How long a drive is it to Clemson SC to watch ACC hoops? Guess I could do that in ATL too with GA Tech, but might get caught in traffic for 7pm games. Even though UGA is a football school, they still field solid hoops teams and play in a competitive league.
I grew up in smaller town New England but I moved to Cali. for college in 1988 and have stayed there until now. Even with the huge price drops as of late, owning a detached house in a decent neighborhood is still way too expensive for me in the Bay Area, LA or San Diego!!!

If you're used to paying Cali prices I'm sure Athens would be a real treat for you! There are some areas downtown that they are revitalizing which I think is pretty cool. If you live in the downtown area you can walk/bike to a lot of things. North Campus is beautiful!
Clemson is about 85 miles from Athens...I guess commute time will all depend on traffic although I don't think you'd see anything like on the way to Atlanta.
Again, good luck with your search. If you run across anything in Athens that you'd like more info about please let me know....I lived there for 15 years and still have family/friends there who may be of assistance!

Maybe I just don't have good directions or know how to get there. Everytime I've tried to go that way it's taken about 6 hours (from Atlanta) via the interstates. If you know of a faster way to get there by all means, please educate me.

CTR88...
I have a suggestion for you if you haven't already done this.
Go to google maps and use the "street view" tool to virtually cruise around Athens. It's completely covered and you will be able to pan around and look out the window as if you were really there.
I'll get you started...

Going through Atlanta from Athens to get to Savannah is something I have never heard of. That makes no sense. In fact it is so absurd I now doubt you have ever made the trip. Most people go down 441 all the way to I-16 and then east to Savannah. The internet maps will tell you it is a little over four hours but you can do it under four with out speeding. I take a short cut where I cut over through Wrightsville and Swainsboro and do it in about 3 1/2 hours.

Well I don't know if you mentioned it or if you just didn't read it but I quoted the travel times to Chas.
I wouldn't want to go to Savannah. No offense but I'd rather not have to wade through alligators to get to the ocean.

Hey box of rocks, I mean Shagbark, that's what the 10 million tourist that go to the beach in Savannah every year do. Brilliant!

I didn't mean to provoke you. Perhaps dangerously high levels of rudeness is one of the reasons I am not one of those 10 million people but even when I lived in Jacksonville we would pass right by savannah and go to Charleston. Come to think of it, savannah is a rude place. I remember the last time I was there just passing through, I got cut off in traffic and another time I got pulled over by the cops and give 3 citations. Not very welcoming. I couldn't wait to leave.

Your loss. Don't get offended when someone corrects you for not knowing what you are talking about on a message board.

I really think Athens will be more "up your alley" than Jacksonville. Football games up there are great, it has character, pretty good weather, and there are a lot of nature-type activities. It is not on our list because it isn't really a daytrip from the beach, how important is that to you?
Atlanta is nice but much more big-city with a lot less outdoorsy options close by.
And I'm totally NOT trying to get pulled into the conversation above me BUT I love Savannah.
