What causes people to do this? How do we stop it?
ROME, Ga. -- A raid on Thursday in Floyd County uncovered 18 pit bulls allegedly being groomed for dogfighting. Police said many of the dogs were in bad shape.
18 Pit Bulls Seized From 'Deplorable Conditions' - News Story - WSB Atlanta
Why do people in the year 2009 still do this? Why do people go watch it? I just cannot understand how people can be so cruel on purpose.
Is it money? Is it just sadistic cruelty? Is it just ignorance?
Why does this seem to be a big thing here in rural parts of Georgia? How do we stop it?
Can anyone help answer these questions?

Neil,
I sympathize with you on this subject but it is a cultural thing beefed up by the rap crowd.
It pretty much reflects the intelligence level as well.
The anti-intellectual message of Rap culture...particularly the notion that being smart means not being "cool", "hood", or "thug" enough, has been a very serious problem for Black youth. Carrying books home from school often meant that there was something wrong with your manhood. You were basically considered soft...a sissy. Today, the problem has gotten worse, because this message has been fully adopted by Rap culture and is also being accepted in the mainstream.
The 16 page Policy Bridge report, entitled "The Rap On Culture", looks at how Popular culture, particularly Rap culture, and the lack of guidance at home impacts low achieving African American students. The report goes beyond the old arguments about poverty being the primary factor for this problem and instead focuses on the role of Cultural conditions. The lack of family support and family structure also seems to play a role.

Neil, I just saw this. I too am appalled by this entire culture.
We need to enact strict Federal laws that not only target the owners & fighters, but every single one of the people in attendance. Smack every one of them with felony charges.
Then, and only then, will this scourge be ended.

If I had any answers, I certainly would have responded. Being a sheltered suburbanite, such things are totally foreign to me.

From what I gather, it tends to be more supported in the black community. Even in this case, it is pretty obvious that the perpetrator is that from the black community, with the name of Kenyetta Towers.
I don't think it's an urban-rural issue more than it is a white-black issue. However, even then, most black people aren't going to be raising their dogs to be pit fighters. Things are more hidden in rural areas. so people can travel to such pits to see the fights. They have to be secluded so they're less likely to be found.

i think part of the blame for things like this is irreresponsible breeders with no care for the breed that are just in it for the money and will sell to anyone. Breeders need to take some responsibility and anctually talk to the people that want to buy their animals.
When my wife and I got our Doberman we had to drive to the breeders house and meet them. They asked about our prior pet experiences, what our intentions were, where the dog would be kept and what our work schedules were among other things.if they didnt feel you were right, they wouldnt sell you a dog and after six months we had to take the dog back up there so they could see how he was doing. That is resopnsibility and care for the breed.
Pitbulls arent bad animals if they are bred, raised and conditioned properly.

well i suppose we might not of HAD to, but they asked us to and we obliged. No we did not lease the dog... ...but you would be surprised at how REAL breeders work, If you get a female from them their is a clause in the sales contract that they reserve the right to breed the dog if they choose, of course they handle all costs and care associated. Things are bit different when someone does it for a living and not just to amke a couple quick bucks of anybody that reads a newspaper ad.

I've bought full blooded dogs before from professional breeders and never went though such. That would be a hard sale in these parts.
