Also, the majority of people from the southern states are descended from peoples from the British Isles.

The Scots-Irish were a mix of Scots and Northern English settlers into Ulster.

Now, we dont not sound anything like people from Georgia. but from the link that was posted you will hear the same the over pronuncing of the (R)
AND (A) maybe thats why people think that we in lancashire talk slow and why people think that the folk of Georgia talk slow.

Example, my local Accent.

Yeah but remember that not everyone had slaves and certainly not nannies. So I don't know about that argument. As far as talking slow I think it's all too subjective for a clear definite answer.

TakeAHike, thanks so much for your articles from a native educated) Georgian. I am going to use them in my speech when I do volunteer work at the Governor's Mansion. I am from the Atlanta area, but lived in northwest Georgia and southeast Tennesee for twenty years. Currently, I live in metro Atlanta (in the town where I grew up)and am so tired of hearing "where on earth are you from?". Bear in mind, this usually comes from a heavily accented northern mouth.

People in Georgia talk slow for the same reason people in Alaska talk fast.
