Athens Crime (Lumpkin: real estate, for rent, neighborhoods)

for those enthralled with Athens and are considering moving here, here is a bit from today's paper:

"We've been trying to build more neighborhood watch groups," police Chief Jack Lumpkin said. "They are great and tend to be more active when there is an identifiable problem."
The problem is obvious: The county is on pace to see a record 2,000 burglaries this year, as opposed to 1,706 last year and 1,306 in 2007.""


prostitution is a problem as well with them spreading into neighborhoods. real estate has collapsed for the most part. lot of stuff for rent. it is questionable how many students will return to school in the fall and whether they will continue to support the economy. we have lost hundreds of factory/plant jobs here. the quality of life is nothing like what it used to be i.e. going from positive to negative.
