Default Forsyth..Monroe County

I am currently looking to relocate into the Monroe County area, and am very curious about the housing situation. When I search for homes, I find large, beautiful homes in subdivisions like Adamsville Park Etc, as well as a large number of homes that appear to be forclosed on it virtually empty neighborhoods (maybe a couple homes built). Did this area start building homes with the expectation of a boom, only to bust with the market in 2006? Are these homes out near Johnstonville road in neighborhoods that are not maintained? Why are there homes worth 500,000 selling for 300,000? Just hoping someone could provide some background on the area. I am married with two young children (2 and 4) and looking for family friendly areas.

Thanks in advance.

I did my home finding trip down there about two weeks ago. I was very close to purchasing a home in that area, but at the end of the day I opted to live down in Warner Robins. I was not impressed with the Monroe county schools (as they compared to Houston County schools) and felt it would be a bit too much isolation for my young children. We were looking in River Forest as well as a few other Subdivisions right in that area. I think it could be nice, but weighing what is available to my children in Warner Robins versus Monroe County, I just wasn't willing to risk it.
